IT’S ONE OF WINTER fashion’s most important commandments: layering is the key to looking cool and feeling warm. No brand understands this better than Uniqlo, the cult Japanese outfitter behind our favourite elevated essentials, including cashmere that’s thoughtfully designed, to be worn everyday.

In fact, one of the first compliments I received after starting my job at Esquire was directed at my cashmere jumper. A colleague was admiring its rich purple colour, the kind the old kings wore; in our market of popular neutrals, she hadn’t seen anything quite like it. It felt like sharing a secret, then, when I said, “It’s from Uniqlo”. Later, she told me that she ran to the nearest Uniqlo store and got a cashmere knit of her own in a honeycomb yellow. She wore it layered under a coat, over collared shirts, even wrapped it around her neck when she forgot her scarf, letting it be the pop of colour her outfit needed on a dreary wet day.

The cold is setting in fast this May, but thankfully the cashmere shelves at Uniqlo are being replenished. Made in a rainbow of 30 colours, from jammy reds to cool blues and, yes, go-with-everything neutrals, Uniqlo’s newest range of 100 percent cashmere pieces is made to be mixed and matched; worn over one another; taken off and tied around your shoulders. As well as feeling like the fashion crowd’s favourite layer, the brand’s cashmere knits are also a steal at $129.99 – practically unheard of, given they’re made from 100 percent cashmere. Accessibility at this price point is one thing, and another entirely when it comes to caring for a rich fabric such as cashmere. Hand-washable at home and crafted with anti-pilling processing? Uniqlo, you’ve done it again.

Our style advice? The knitwear seamlessly blends into the modern wardrobe of layered monochromes, especially if you’re already a fiend for Uniqlo’s neutrals. If you’re one to match your sock colour to your sweater, another category that maybe matches this extensive colour catalogue are Uniqlo’s colourful 50 socks, which cost as much as a coffee at $4.90.

Recently, we tested out this particular colour theory in the Australian countryside, where, between the overcast sky and lush green hills, Uniqlo’s cashmere popped from as far as the eye can see. See the full photoshoot below.
