DESPITE THE SUB-$500 price tag, MoonSwatches are irresistible for seasoned watch collectors, too. A-listers like Daniel Craig (who owns the rare ‘Neptune’), Ed Sheeran (‘Pink MoonPhase’) and Swedish former footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović (‘Mars’) are all partial to the bioceramic timepiece. While Craig, for instance, would wear his more casually when he wants to retire his 007 Seamasters and Moonphases to the box, the MoonSwatch still presents the chance to wear a watch built like Omega’s classic Speedmaster Moonwatch, but with the charming appearance of a novelty watch you’d score in a Happy Meal. (Adding to that arrested development feel, Hunter Biden is also a fan.)

Three years since its viral release, more celebrities are outing themselves as MoonSwatch fans. American filmmaker Spike Lee is the newest member to join the widening Venn diagram of Hollywood and horology. Currently making the press rounds for his upcoming film, Highest 2 Lowest, starring Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky in his film debut, Lee was spotted at premieres and on talk shows with the ‘Mission on Earth – Lava’ MoonSwatch. Out of all the 25 colourways currently available, the blood orange is the most fitting for the Malcolm X director, who’s never not seen wearing his New York Knicks merch. (Swatch and Omega could co-opt it as Knicks-themed.)

Looking closer, orange accents cover the handsets, hour markers, typography, and the contrast stitching in the Velcro strap. Inspired by the Speedmaster ‘Ultraman’ from 1968, the ‘Lava’ features a 42 mm case that mirrors the vintage favourite with its angular and smooth lugs. The MoonSwatch is no child’s toy, which – amongst Lee’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Reversos and Rolex Daytonas – proves he’s no watch snob.
