TOM CRUISE accepted his first Oscar on Sunday night at the Governors Awards in Los Angeles, wearing one of the most rarefied watches in the Rolex catalogue: a platinum Day-Date 40 with a white mother-of-pearl dial and baguette-cut diamond markers.

The full-precious-metal “President” bracelet model is already one of Rolex’s most elevated pieces; in this configuration, it is produced in extremely limited numbers.

At retail, it sits around AUD$142,000, though in reality interested parties are likely to face long wait lists or never see one at all.

Pre-owned versions can be found on the secondary market, although still with a price tag one may reasonably consider “high”.

$50Cruise’s affinity for Rolex stretches back more than four decades.

On screen, he wore a yellow-gold Day-Date in 1988’s Rain Man and a steel Air-King in Cocktail, from the same year.

Off screen, the relationship has deepened.

He has been seen in a steel Datejust ref. 16200, a technically sophisticated Sky-Dweller, a Daytona and a white gold GMT-Master II “Pepsi”.

More recently, The Cruiser has gravitated toward precious-metal Day-Dates, including a white-gold example with a meteorite dial — material cut from the Gibeon meteorite, its crystalline patterns formed over millions of years in space.

Rolex has never announced Cruise as an ambassador, but he has worn the brand consistently at high-profile moments: in the Rolex box at 2025’s Wimbledon, at Cannes, in Tokyo for this year’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning premiere — and now, at a milestone Academy ceremony.

On a night that recognised his “unwavering commitment” to cinema and the theatrical experience, Cruise’s watch choice was on point.

The Day-Date is a watch long associated with leaders and cultural figures.

In platinum, it suited the moment Cruise finally joined the ranks of Oscar winners.
