The best Air Jordan 3 colourways of all time, ranked
With the dual honour of having a place in both basketball and sneaker history, the Air Jordan 3 is a truly iconic shoe. These are the best colourways to ever adorn the silhouette
THE AIR JORDAN 1 established Jordan sneakers as the go-to choice for basketball players and the Jordan 2 added the iconic Jumpman logo, but it was the Jordan 3 that expanded the line’s appeal to us regular folk. The Jordan 3 took the performance capabilities of its predecessors and turned them into something more suitable for everyday wear, while also taking the high top down to a three-quarter cut.
In introducing an elephant print pattern – which has since become a mainstay in Nike designs – lowering the cut and experimenting with more relaxed colourways, the AJ3 made a clear statement: this is a shoe that will perform well on the court, but is equally adept off it. Unsurprisingly, the Jordan 3 was a hit.
For the first time, Jordans weren’t just basketball shoes. Sure, MJ himself still wore them during games (he won his first MVP award in 1988, the year the Jordan 3 was released), but you were just as likely to see them on the street. This popularity has endured over the decades. The Jordan 3 became the first Jordan to be given the retro treatment in 1994, and it still attracts buyers looking to recapture that retro aesthetic.
Now there have been tens of dozens Air Jordan 3 colourways, as can be expected of such a popular silhouette, but which of them is the best? That’s what we’re going to decide. Read on for our top ten Air Jordan 3s.

Which Air Jordan 3s are the best?
10. Air Jordan 3 ‘Cool Gray’
One of the first Air Jordan 3 colourways to release after the original four, Cool Gray strayed from the standard AJ3 formula with a design that had no attachment to Michael Jordan. There was no obscure moment, no convoluted backstory and no recently unearthed footage of Jordan wearing this shoe to attract buyers. But attract them it did, in an early sign that the Jordan brand was becoming more lifestyle-oriented.
9. Air Jordan 3 ‘JTH’
Is there some super obvious connection between Justin Timberlake and Air Jordans that everyone knows about? If so, we’ve completely missed it, because when Justin Timberlake wore this pair of customised sneakers during the Super Bowl 52 half time show and announced a mass drop later that night, we were left dumbfounded. Regardless of how much sense it makes, this AJ3 is one of the best. It’s based on an original sketch from the shoe’s designer, Tinker Hatfield, and takes its name from a confusing amalgamation of Hatfield and Timberlake’s initials. Justin Tinkerlake Hatfield, we guess?
8. Air Jordan 3 ‘True Blue’
The True Blue Air Jordan 3 stands out for a number of reasons. As one of the original four AJ3 colourways, it has always been a prized sneaker, but it’s the only one of the original four that doesn’t derive its colour scheme from the uniforms of Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls. For that reason, MJ didn’t wear a True Blue in-game until much later in his career, when he joined a new team. That’s right, Jordan wore this sneaker when he played for the Washington Wizards, whose primary blue colour goes much better with the True Blue’s accents.
7. Air Jordan 3 ‘Black Cement’
Of the four original AJ3s, Black Cement proved to be the most popular. Jordan wore it countless times on the court, and having less colour than its sister shoes actually makes Black Cement more versatile and ultimately, more wearable. It’s been re-released countless times and if it hasn’t gone out of fashion by now, we doubt it ever will.
6. Air Jordan 3 x J Balvin
One of the more colourful selections we’ve made on this list, this AJ3 collab with Colombian musician J Balvin combines a toned-down elephant print with rainbow gradients on the heel. The shoes are a tribute to Balvin’s hometown of Medellín, Colombia, a similarly vibrant city. It avoids the common sneaker collab mistake of leaning too far into its celebrity subject’s aesthetic, but still carries enough of Balvin’s style to feel special. And unlike many celebrity sneaker collabs, it’s still laidback enough to be wearable.
5. Air Jordan 3 ‘Lucky Green’
In its marketing material for this sneaker, Nike insists that its colourway carries good luck. But whether lady luck is on this shoe’s side or not, the shamrock-hued accents and elephant print upper make for a dynamic duo that is valued by both collectors and the general public. The last time Lucky Green re-released, it was only available in women’s sizes, so you might need to do some quick conversions to figure out your fit, but it’ll be worth it.
4. Air Jordan 3 ‘Mocha’
Nowadays, every Air Jordan or Nike shoe receives tens of dozens – or even hundreds – of colourways, but it wasn’t always like that. There was a time when sneaker purists dictated that sneakers keep their colourways minimal. As such, the AJ3 originally came in just a handful of colours, mainly pertaining to the Chicago Bulls uniforms. Mocha broke all the rules when it was released in 2001, with a more relaxed, lifestyle-suited colourway that prioritised a muted, earthy palette over garish sports team colours. It worked, and it set a standard to be followed across the industry.
3. Air Jordan 3 ‘White Cement’
If you’re a basketball fan, chances are you’ve seen Michael Jordan’s iconic free throw line dunk from the 1988 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, but what you probably didn’t know is that Jordan was wearing this very shoe during the competition. That fact alone should be enough to endear the White Cement to you, but if you also consider that it’s one of the original four AJ3s and has endured the test of time to remain one of just two that are still in production and you’ll see that it’s one of the best shoes ever made. Whether you’re a sneaker purist, newbie or an OG that insists everything was better back in your day, there’s something to like about White Cement.
2. Air Jordan 3 ‘UNC’
To be clear, the real UNC Air Jordan 3s that were made exclusively for Jordan’s alma mater, the University of North Carolina, go for prices in the five-digit range, and these aren’t those. What they are is a damn good remake, with the only noticeable difference being that they have the Jordan logo on the tongue rather than the UNC logo. If you don’t mind eschewing that one small detail, you can save thousands with what is still a fantastic shoe.
1. Air Jordan 3 ‘Fire Red’
It would be considered heresy if we were to put anything but one of the four original AJ3 colourways at the top of this list, so we’re playing it safe. That’s not to say that we don’t think Fire Red is the best AJ3 though, because we do. Jordan wore these on the court in 1988, as he was coming back from the ankle injury that ended his sophomore season and nearly derailed his career. The Fire Red AJ3 became synonymous with Jordan’s ability to bounce back, and has been a highly coveted collector’s item ever since. Plus, those red accents go with the Chicago Bulls uniform like Jordan goes with winning.
How to wear and style retro Jordan 3s
Styling Jordan 3s is all about embracing their retro appeal while blending them with modern touches. Remember, the Jordan 3 symbolised Jordan’s movement into a more lifestyle-focused era, so you don’t necessarily need to pair them with a basketball uniform (but if you want to, all power to you). For a classic casual ‘fit, pair a Jordan 3 with high-waisted jeans, cargo pants and a vintage-inspired T-shirt or jumper.
If you want the Jordan 3 to figure into an athleisure outfit, try it with shorts or tracksuit pants and a fitted hoodie for a sportier look (or a full-blown Chicago Bulls jersey, for authenticity’s sake). For a more elevated take, wear it with cropped tailored pants and a relaxed button-down or blazer.
