APPLE TV+ might have the best hit-to-miss ratio of any streaming platform. The streamer doesn’t put out too much content, only totalling around three or four new series and films per month, but the standard of quality is much higher than what you’ll find on Netflix, HBO Max or any other streamer that takes a quantity over quality approach.

The limited number of releases on Apple TV+ also feels more aligned to the golden age of television, when our only choice of what to watch was whatever the biggest channels were broadcasting. As a result, everyone was watching the same shows, and a series becoming a mass-cultural phenomenon was far more common. Nowadays, audiences are fragmented across hundreds of niche series. Most people have seen The White Lotus, sure, but how many are up to date with Ice Road Truckers season 11?

On Apple TV+, you can be assured of a high level of quality, while maximising your chances of contributing to relevant water cooler chit chat around the office with only a limited selection of content to choose from. To help you find what’s worth watching on Apple TV+ in August, we’ve rounded up the best new pieces of content coming to the streamer. Scroll on, and get ready to add to your watchlist.

Chief of War

Chief of War is Apple TV+’s new 19th-century epic starring, executive produced and written by Jason Momoa. The nine episode series is set among the idyllic backdrop of the Hawaiian islands and centres on Ka’iana (Momoa), a warrior chief who travels the islands seeking to gain support for unification between Hawaii’s four major kingdoms before Western colonisation takes hold.

Bringing the indigenous perspective to the forefront, Chief of War‘s dialogue is spoken almost entirely in Ōlelo Hawai’i and features a predominantly Polynesian cast, including Temuera Morrison, Luciane Buchanan, Te Ao o Hinepehinga and Cliff Curtis.

Stillwater, season 4

Stillwater is based on Scholastic book series ‘Zen’ by Jon J Muth. It follows a panda who imparts wisdom upon young siblings Karl, Addy and Michael. The trio go through their fair share of challenges, but their neighbour Stillwater teaches them how to manage their feelings. Parents, if you’re looking to teach your kids the value of mindfulness, this Panda can get the job done.

Platonic, season 2

Focusing on adamantly platonic best friends Will and Sylvia, played by Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, Platonic season two will again follow the duo as they “contend with new midlife hurdles, including work, weddings and partners in crises”, according to the season’s logline. More accurately, Will’s new relationship threatens his friendship with Sylvia, but since they’re “just friends”, they’ll have to make it work.

Invasion, season 3

Expansive sci-fi series Invasion returns for a third season in August. The first two seasons of the series explored an alien invasion through multiple perspectives around the world. These perspectives will align for the first time in season three, as the series’ main characters are brought together for a mission infiltrating the alien mothership. They’ll have to act quickly, as ultimate apex aliens have finally emerged and are spreading their deadly tendrils across the planet.
