THIS TIME LAST YEAR, if you had asked us about the world’s coolest sneaker brand, Puma wouldn’t have been our first pick. But thanks in large part to its Speedcat model being named the hottest sneaker of 2024 Q4 by fashion tech company Lyst, Puma has reentered the zeitgeist via slimline kicks. And with an archive that stems back 76 years, the brand has plenty more retro styles to mine. Expect some of the best use of suede seen on sneakers, as the brand has a deft hand at making even the most jewel-toned seem palatable. Even as football sneakers are becoming more and more literal, Puma has an eye for the classics, like making a gold shoe the old fashioned way with modern tech.
In terms of collaborations, Puma has also worked with some of fashion’s biggest tastemakers over the years, including KIDSUPER and Rihanna’s Fenty brand – there’s no forgetting her Puma x Fenty ‘Phatty’ creepers. Meanwhile, the brand also has long associations with Formula 1; recently, Lewis Hamilton has been seen sporting a pair of unreleased red Speedcats, as part of a Scuderia Ferrari collab.

Crowned the hottest sneaker of Q4 last year, the Puma Speedcat has catapulted the brand into the slim sneaker conversation. It’s also helped to have celebs like Troye Sivan and Dua Lipa cosign the style into the public eye. ‘Tired of the soccer-inspired shoe?’ these style icons seemed to ask; the Speedcat has its roots in Formula 1. Designed with a low-profile rubber sole to help handle brakes and throttles, the Speedcat is also finding popularity for its black sole in a market full of brown ones.

It’s the red version that reintroduced the sneaker to the world in a bold way. (They’ve also been seen on the feet on a number of people here at the Esquire office.) Frequent collaborators Puma and Brooklyn-based brand KIDSUPER have released their take on the brand’s iconic Indoor sneaker. The canvas uppers are printed with murky green tie dye-looking effect, with suede panels stitched on throughout. It’s a monochrome colourway that gives the football shoe a streetwear edge.

One of the brand’s heritage styles, Puma brought back this football shoe in a leather construction. The tongue flap is all the rage at the moment as our sneaker appetite is veering more towards the literal origins of styles, but this one’s removable should you wish to go without.
