WITH AUSTRALIA’S REPUTATION AS a sports-mad society, it’s little surprise our cities’ pubs make fantastic venues for catching a game. After all, who needs an official sports bar when your local brewster boasts myriad TVs and an atmosphere to rival a live crowd? So, Sydneysiders specifically; rather than watching on at home, why not head out and get amongst the fun for the next major match or grand final?

With only five days left of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, it’s time to plan (and book) where you’ll be catching the games, including Sunday night’s final. Ahead, see our recommendations for the best venues in and around the Sydney CBD.

The Vic On the Park

The Vic On the Park is one of the Inner West’s favourite pubs, and with a basketball court, spacious beer garden — complete with a big screen — and a mix of craft and draught beers on tap, it’s not hard to understand why. Get comfy in the courtyard to catch a game out back, or watch it on one of the small screens on the front bar.

The Clock Hotel

With multiple levels, indoor and outdoor spaces and plenty of TVs throughout, Surry Hills’ The Clock Hotel is always a great vibe — no less when a game is on.

Throughout the WWC, for those who’ve signed up online, the hotel has been pouring free margaritas to celebrate the first Matildas goal scored each game. Just make sure to book a table through their website, they’re in high demand!

The Dolphin Hotel

Surry Hills

The Surry Hills boozer offers all the good vibes across three unique floors designed by George Livissianis, the mastermind behind The Apollo and Cho Cho San. Diners can order everything from Italian to charcuterie style plates and classic burgers and fries in The Dolphin’s revamped dining room, bar and lounge, open-air terrace, side bar and even street side seating.

The pub will be airing the Matildas v England semi-final live at 8pm with sound in all areas of the pub — meaning there’s no bead seat here! You can also audibly catch all the action with tonight’s Spain v Sweden game at 6pm.

Side note: Paul Mescal was also spotted here a few years ago — so clearly, it should be on your hit list.

Coogee Bay Hotel

If you don’t mind a bit of mayhem — it’s almost certain to pack out ahead of any major sporting match — the Coogee Bay Hotel is the Eastern Suburbs mainstay worth checking out. If you can’t secure a spot in the famous beer garden, head inside to catch the game at the bar — or pop down the street for a quick swim and try your luck again later.

The Woollahra Hotel

Whether you’d rather set up camp in the lush courtyard or among the art decor interior, you’ll be sure to enjoy The Woollahra Hotel’s impressive array of beers on tap, great wine list and even better food menu.

Hotel Harry’s

Formerly the Macquarie Hotel, Harry’s is an inner-city gem with a Cuban-inspired menu, cocktail jugs and multiple seating areas, both indoors and out, from which you can watch a game.

If you’re really wanting to get in the spirit, why not head to an official sports bar? Stacked on top of Bistrode CBD and the Hotel CBD, York 75 is the niche, American-style clubroom dreams are made of. With 20 (yes, 20) televisions in both the main bar and pool room, streaming everything from the Superbowl to the Netball World Cup, enjoy whatever your heart desires alongside a small selection of beers and cosy vibes.
