For date night, do as Brad Pitt in velvet
The 61-year-old proves the luxe fabric offers warmth and style for romantic nights on the town this winter

BRAD PITT has the winning formula for dressing for date night this winter: velvet. Alright, it’s just the start of summer in New York City, where the actor was spotted off to date night with girlfriend Ines de Ramon, but the unseasonal rain and humidity didn’t deter Pitt from pulling off two looks in the luxe fabric. Take it as our good fortune, then, to test out this style note.
On Saturday, the 61-year-old wore a full look from American designer Willy Chavarria’s autumn/winter 2025 collection, a crushed blue velvet jacket over a striped shirt and wide-leg jeans. Along with his buzzcut, the oversized fit of the jacket was pure ’90s, a look his Fight Club character Tyler Durden would throw some hands to get fresh off the runway. The night before too, Pitt also wore the fabric on a double-date with Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid, this time in jean-style cut pants (that faux distressing!) in the plush fabric with a silky blue shirt.

What makes velvet the perfect date night fabric? On a practical note, its dense raised surface acts like a thick layer of insulation, like how goosebumps trap warm air. Unlike cotton or linen, the thickness of the fabric keeps this warm air in. Its softness also makes any structured look wilt into something casual. (A similar effect can be said for suede. Like its leather cousin, velvet is the type of fabric to go big on colour.)
Romance-wise, velvet is one of those tactile fabrics that makes you want to touch it. Its high sheen also makes it an ideal fabric at night when you want to be closest with your partner. Pairing it with silk also packs in more shine, your comfort level willing. Is there anything more romantic than touch?
