SINGING SUPERSTAR ADELE has joined the swelling ranks of teetotalling celebrities after telling fans at her Vegas residency that she gave up alcohol a few months ago after being a “borderline alcoholic” in her 20s.

The singer said her sobriety hasn’t been easy and she dearly misses alcohol.

“I stopped drinking maybe like three-and-a-half months ago,” the 35-year-old said during her performance at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Saturday. “It’s boring. I mean, I was literally borderline alcoholic for quite a lot of my 20s, but I miss it so much.”

She told a fan: “So enjoy your whiskey sour. I’m very, very jealous.”

Adele has previously detailed her struggles with alcohol, which became more acute during the Covid lockdown, when her drinking “got earlier and earlier” in the day. “I’ve always had a very close relationship with alcohol. I was always very fascinated by alcohol. It’s what kept my dad from me. So I always wanted to know what was so great about it.”

She added that alcohol made her feel more vulnerable to media intrusion. “They descend, and descend, and descend on you, which drives you fucking mad.”

The singer’s decision to give up booze follows Bradley Cooper’s admission in August that he too struggled with alcohol and drug addition in his 20s but has since been sober and clean for 19 years.

In an interview with legendary survivalist and adventurer Bear Grylls, the 48-year-old Maestro star elaborated on his past addiction struggles—which he first revealed in 2022 via the ‘Smartless’ podcast—saying he felt “very lucky” to have overcome some difficult years with drugs and alcohol.

“In terms of alcohol and drugs, yeah. But nothing to do with fame, though,” Cooper told Grylls, adding: “But I was lucky. I got sober at 29 years old, and I’ve been sober for 19 years. I’ve been very lucky.”

Below, you’ll find other leading celebrities who have decided to swap the bottle for a better, more productive and ultimately healthier life.

The singer’s recent decision to give booze the boot follows previous attempts at sobriety, telling Oprah Winfrey that she stopped drinking after her estranged father, Mark Evans, died in May 2021. “That’s one great way of really sort of getting to know yourself, is just drinking water and being sober as anything,” she said in the pair’s televised interview.

In 2022, Bradley Cooper revealed on the ‘Smartless’ podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Shaun Hayes that he struggled with alcohol for a long time, but it was Will Arnett that put him on the straight and narrow.

Holding back tears, Cooper recalled a time when Arnett had asked him if he had taken his dogs out for a walk—it was 4pm. “That was the first time I ever realised I had a problem with drugs and alcohol. The guy that I think is doing mean humour is telling me the truth, and it changed my entire life,” said Cooper.

“Will took that risk of having that hard conversation with me in, like, July of 2000, and that put me on a path of deciding to change my life. It truly was Will Arnett—he is the reason.”

Tom Holland opened up about his sobriety journey in a recent interview via the ‘On Purpose With Jay Shetty’ podcast, describing that he definitely had a problem with alcohol. “I’m happy to say it—I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not shying away from that at all,” he told Shetty.

Holland is now almost two years sober, saying it’s one of the best decisions he’s ever made. “I could sleep better. I could handle problems better. Things that would go wrong on set that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride. I had such better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter and I just sort of said to myself, ‘Why? Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?’”
