JAMES BOND and Christopher Nolan: A pairing of epic proportions, wouldn’t you say? Well, in a recent interview with Happy Sad Confused podcast host Josh Horowitz, the Oppenheimer filmmaker admitted that he would helm the director’s chair for a future Bond film if the opportunity was presented to him, but with a few exceptions.

“The influence of those movies on my filmography is embarrassingly apparent. And so there’s no attempt to shy away from that. I love the films,” Nolan said in the interview. “You know, it would be an amazing privilege to do one.”

The filmmaker, who’s incredible filmography includes the likes of Memento, Interstellar, Inception and Dunkirk, went on to say that in the case of working on a film as significant as the James Bond franchise: “you’re working within a particular set of constraints” and having the “right attitude” is a must.

“It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and really burrow into something within the appropriate constraints because you would never want to take on something like that and do it wrong,” he added.

If the cine-gods were to answer our prayers and Christopher Nolan was to direct the next Bond film/s, it wouldn’t be the first time the Oscar-nominated director would step into a the world of an iconic movie franchise.

Let us take you back to 2005 when a little film by the name of Batman Begins would totally reimagine the world of superhero films in Hollywood. Three years later, The Dark Knight would hit cinemas, offering what is, perhaps, Christopher Nolan’s greatest piece of work to date. The success of Nolan’s Batman franchise comes down to many factors, including his ability to completely explore the character with his own creative lens. So he’s shown he has the guns to take on something already iconic and reimagine and reinterpret it for the masses.

“You wouldn’t want to take on a film not fully committed to what you bring to the table creatively. So as a writer, casting, everything, it’s a full package,” he said. “You’d have to be really needed, you’d have to be really wanted in terms of bringing the totality of what you bring to a character. Otherwise, I’m very happy to be first in line to see whatever they do.”

While this piece of knowledge is reassuring in itself, Nolan also happens to be friends with Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, as revealed in a 2017 interview with Playboy Magazine. This, coupled with his interest in actually directing a James Bond film, is all we need as fans for now.

“I deeply love the character, and I’m always excited to see what they do with it,” he said in 2017. “Maybe one day that would work out. You’d have to be needed, if you know what I mean. It has to need reinvention; it has to need you. And they’re getting along very well.”
