THE INTERSECTION between fame and privacy has grown increasingly murky with a new scandal steering two unlikely names into the headlines: MMA fighter Conor McGregor and artist Azealia Banks.

What began as a string of cryptic social media posts has escalated into public accusations of harassment, complete with leaked messages, some very out-there photos of McGregor and allegations of intimidation. If you’re wondering where on earth all of this came from, here’s a full breakdown of what’s been said, what’s known about the controversy and what the ramifications might be.

What’s going on with Azealia Banks and Conor McGregor?

Earlier this week, Azealia Banks posted a barrage of screenshots on X, alleging that Conor McGregor had been sending her explicit and unsolicited direct messages. Among the allegations were sexually suggestive photos followed by alleged messages from McGregor that read “Don’t be a rat cos all rats get caught” and “lifting weights.”

“How you gonna send a b***tch some crooked d**k pics then threaten her not to tell. @TheNotoriousMMA. do you know who the f**k I am?”, Banks posted.

“How are you really going to sexually harass me with the potato farmer d**k then threaten me not to tell???”, she continued in a since deleted post. “Honey … ain’t u trying to be the president of Ireland what is it giving fam? Use some f**king sunscreen damn”.

McGregor is in a relationship with the mother of his four children, Dee Devlin. The couple have been together since 2008 and are currently engaged.

Has Conor McGregor responded to the accusations?

So far, McGregor has remained publicly silent. In the hours after Banks began posting, he shared photos of himself doing yoga poses on a yacht. There’s been no direct statement from him or his representatives addressing the situation.

Are the screenshots real?

At this point, the authenticity of the messages remains unverified. The images Banks posted appeared to show McGregor, but as with any alleged leak, there’s no confirmation that they haven’t been altered or taken out of context. The screenshots were later deleted, but not before being widely circulated across news outlets and social media.

That remains to be seen. As of now, no legal complaint has been filed, and McGregor hasn’t made any public moves to dispute or refute the allegations. Whether Banks decides to pursue the matter further legally, or whether McGregor’s team will challenge the claims is unclear.

But even without legal fallout, the reputational damage could be significant. If the screenshots are real, they paint a troubling portrait of McGregor’s behaviour.

Has McGregor been through controversy before?

Yes, many times. Last year a jury found McGregor liable after he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel room in December 2018. The former UFC champion is alleged to have choked the complainant and made her fear for her life in a hotel room. He has faced no criminal charges related to the incident and is appealing the verdict, arguing that the pair had consensual sex.

McGregor is also facing another civil lawsuit for sexual battery in Florida following an alleged incident in 2023, with a woman alleging he sexually assaulted her in a bathroom.

That’s not even mentioning the current drama of the Irish fighter allegedly caught cheating on his wife with an unnamed woman while holidaying in Florida.

What does this mean for McGregor’s career?

The timing couldn’t be worse. With McGregor looking to revive his fighting career and flirt with politics in Ireland, this scandal could derail his ambitions. Banks, never one to hold back, highlighted the irony of a man seeking public office while allegedly sending explicit messages to a woman he’s never met.

So . . . what’s next?

This is one of those stories that may fizzle quickly or ignite further if more evidence emerges or either party decides to escalate. For now, it sits in that murky zone of internet allegations: serious enough to spark headlines, vague enough to remain unresolved.
