THE GOD OF mischief is back for another round of doing what he does best—causing mischief of course. This time around, Tom Hiddleston’s titular trickster and Owen Wilson’s mild-mannered Mobius are battling another formidable (and slightly mind-bending) foe: time-slipping. Take that, everyone that’s said that the superhero genre is played out, this is an enemy we can guarantee you’ve never heard of.
Loki is Marvel’s biggest cash cow amongst its various series’, so you best believe they’re going to milk it for all it’s worth. The show’s first season is still the most watched Marvel series on Disney Plus, and the trailer for season two just became the streaming services biggest ever online trailer debut, with a whopping 80 million views across various platforms—and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
It’s been a rough couple of months for Marvel. With a string of disappointing projects like Secret Invasion drawing the ire of viewers, fans may have just started to drift away from the MCU. Luckily, Marvel clearly knows how draw an audience back in, with the lovable Ke Huy Quan at the forefront of the new trailer.
Admit it, you loved Quan as Indiana Jones’ sidekick, the irresistibly quotable Short Round, back when the actor was knee high to a grasshopper. You may have even shed a tear when the 51-year-old emerged from the doldrums of Hollywood purgatory to win the Oscar for best supporting actor earlier this year– we absolutely did. Now, Quan is here to stay and thankfully, no matter what timeline Loki ends up in, we’re certainly in a good one if we’re being treated to more Ke Huy Quan.
Ok, that’s enough fanboying over Quan. You’re here to find out more about Loki! Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Read on for everything we know about Loki season two.
What is Loki season two about?
Building off season one’s chaotic finale, the new trailer gives us an insight into what we can expect as Loki and Mobius chase Sophia Di Martino’s ‘Sylvie’ across the multiverse. All while battling the aforementioned time-slipping phenomenon, and Kang the Conqueror, played by the embattled Jonathan Majors.
As per the show’s official synopsis, “Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes, and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.” That first part is as expected, but we’re not exactly sure what an exploration of “free will and glorious purpose” will entail, but it sounds like something Marcus Aurelius would say, so who are we to complain?
Whatever happens in Loki, the series is expected to continue ramping up the hype towards the MCU’s phase five, with direct connections to two upcoming films—The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.
Who has been cast in Loki season two?
Apart from Ke Huy Quan, Loki season two will introduce Blindspotting actor Rafael Casal and Game of Thrones actress Kate Dickie to the Marvel multiverse, although their specific roles haven’t been revealed yet.
The trailer also shows that nearly every major character will return from season one. Obviously, Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role as Loki, alongside Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Tara Strong, and Eugene Cordero. The questions surrounding Jonathan Majors viability in the series also seem to have been answered, but we’ll get to that.
Will Jonathan Majors be in Loki season two?
Jonathan Majors future in the MCU has been under a shroud of uncertainty following the actors arrest for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend earlier this year. Majors, who was something of a rising star in Hollywood prior to his arrest, with roles in Da 5 Bloods, Devotion, and Creed III, has now been confirmed to be in season two of Loki, after appearing in the first trailer.
Majors will play time-travelling mad scientist Viktor Timely, a variant of Nathaniel Richards, after last appearing in a post-credit’s scene for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as another of Richards’ variants—Kang the Conqueror. In the trailer, Majors’ character can be heard saying “make the hard choice”, perhaps symbolising Marvel’s decision to keep the actor on board.
It remains to be seen whether Majors will play a minimised role in Loki season two, or how he figures into Marvel’s plans for upcoming films.
When will Loki season two be released?
Season two of Loki will premiere on Disney Plus on October 6th, 2023. Check out the full new trailer below:
