Wolverine and Deadpool in 'Deadpool 3'

WAKING UP to the sight of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman dressed in their respective Deadpool and Wolverine costumes is a pretty satisfying experience for any comic book fan — especially five years after they were last seen on screen. But what likely caught your attention wasn’t the fact that the two Marvel superheroes and real-life friends are together in frame — we know that both characters will team up in Deadpool 3 — but rather, Jackman’s Wolverine is pictured wearing the iconic yellow suit from the 1990s animated series.

What exactly does it mean for Jackman’s Logan and his role in the upcoming Deadpool 3? Let’s discuss.

What is Deadpool 3 about?

Last year, Ryan Reynolds took to socials to announce to the world that Hugh Jackman was reprising his fame-making role as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. The internet was in a frenzy… until questions started being asked like, how exactly is that going to happen — didn’t Wolverine die in Logan?

“Logan died in Logan. Not touching that,” said Reynolds via Instagram and Twitter. “What actually happens in our film is…” before Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” starts playing over the actors explaining the plot of the upcoming film. Classic.

While Reynolds’ explainer (below) might be little to no help at all, we suspect the Marvel Multiverse to have something to do with Logan’s revival, considering this third Deadpool film is now a Marvel Studios production, making the switch from 20th Century Fox. With that in mind, it makes it ideal to introduce the multiverse — a slew of new (or familiar) characters, too.

As you’ve probably already gathered, we also know that, unsurprisingly, Deadpool and Wolverine “hate each other”.

“I’m just talking from my perspective, [Logan’s] frustrated by him — [he] wants to be a million miles away from him or wants to punch him in the head,” Jackman said via social media. “Unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in this movie, so I’m probably going to punch him in the head a lot.”

Reynolds has also teased that the threequel is “looking to go in a completely different direction”. What this direction will reveal still remains to be seen.

Who is starring in Deadpool 3?

Besides Reynolds and Jackman, we know that The Crown‘s Emma Corrin will play one of the main villains of the film. Succession‘s Matthew Macfadyen has also be confirmed to be making an appearance, but in what capacity we’re unsure. Last week, The Hollywood Reporter also announced the news that Jennifer Garner will be reprising her role as Elektra from the 2003 Daredevil and later 2005 Elektra, much to the delight of fans.

Also confirming their return to the Deadpool universe are cast members Morena Baccarin and Stefan Kapičić as Vanessa and Colossus, respectively.

What does the yellow suit symbolise?

Staying true to the original comics, Jackman’s donning of the iconic yellow Wolverine suit from the ’90s animated series really is a throwback to the character fans all know and love growing up. Fans are elated to (finally) see Jackman’s MCU Wolverine been given the comic book treatment. Now, all Wolverine needs is his headpiece/mask to complete the outfit…

While it’s uncertain what exactly the yellow suit represents in the context of Wolverine and Deadpool 3, some fans have suggested that if this is to be Jackman’s swan song as Wolverine, what better way to go out than in the original comic book paraphernalia; a fitting end to one of the world’s most iconic comic book characters.
