THIS 2025 F1 season, a new Aussie face is entering the grid. Jack Doohan, son of motorsport legend Mick Doohan, will be racing for Alpine this year, replacing Esteban Ocon. Racing since he was nine in go-karts, Doohan would graduate to junior championships around the world, laying the groundwork for a future that lives up to his famous surname. Residing with Alpine since 2022, starting off as a reserve driver, the 22-year-old will be Australia’s newest F1 driver.

In the spirit of the Australian Grand Prix, where Doohan will get a dream debut on home soil, being just around the corner, this is everything you need to know about the Alpine rising star’s career so far, and what to expect from him in the season ahead.

Indeed, Jack Doohan is the son of motorsport legend Mick Doohan. Born on the Gold Coast, Queensland, on January 20, 2003, Jack is the youngest child of Mick and wife Selina Sines. Jack also has an older sister, born in 1999.

Jack Doohan’s career so far

As far as nepo baby cliches go, racing is certainly in his blood. Written about like lore, Doohan was given his first go-kart at the age of nine by Michael Schumacher, a German former F1 driver and a friend of his father, as a Christmas present. Competing competitively was a no-brainer; starting in 2012, he would win the Australian Karting Championship in 2015 and 2016, but earned his biggest laurel in 2017, finishing third in the CIK-FIA Karting European Championship and sixth in the World Championship.

The ensuing five years saw Doohan working his way towards a shot at F1, making a statement by signing with the Red Bull Junior Team in 2017. Starting his single-seater career at 15 in Formula 4, competing in championships across Europe and Australia. Moving up the Formulae, he set his eyes on the Asia Championship in 2019 where he won five races and ended up second in the championship with Hitech Grand Prix.

Doohan’s Formula 1 career started to take shape after leaving the Red Bull Junior team after his 2021 season. He signed with the Alpine Academy the year after, where he currently resides. He cited the move at the time as a “no-brainer” to advance his career and potential. And it paid off. 2023 saw him take on a role as Alpine’s reserve driver, which let him partake in his first F1 test drive. Continuing in the role into 2024, Doohan made his ambition of joining the F1 grid the next year more vocal. In August 2024, Alpine announced Doohan would replace the departing Esteban Ocon for the 2025 season.

What number will Jack Doohan use during the 2025 F1 season?

Doohan will be racing in his rookie season with the #7 on his Alpine. Australia’s newest F1 driver, Doohan will be joining seasoned driver and former Esquire cover star Oscar Piastri on the grid this season, who will be driving the #81 for McLaren.
