The irresistible pull of Dior Gravity
Stamped with the iconic Dior Oblique motif, the French brand’s Dior Gravity collection of leather goods speaks for itself. Recently, we took pieces from the new collection for a dance
IN THE WORDS of Isaac Newton, every particle attracts every other particle in the universe with a force that is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centres. While that absolute mouthful of a physics equation probably wasn’t top of mind while Kim Jones, artistic director of Dior Men, was developing the Dior Gravity collection, there is certainly an emphasis on proportion. The composition of each piece is perfect. Good luck trying to avoid its gravitational pull.
The Dior Gravity collection first debuted in May this year, alongside the French maison’s Dior Icons capsule, described by Jones as an “ultra-desirable, neo-wardrobe for men”. It featured wide-leg pants and long, structured coats – minimalist wardrobe essentials that provide the perfect backdrop to, say, a pair of leather slides or a tote bag in khaki, beige or black.
The detail that elevates these pieces to the highest realm of luxury status symbols is the maxi version of the Dior Oblique motif, which is imprinted into the soft, supple leather of each bag, shoe and belt. It doesn’t shout ‘Dior’; it whispers it. And you don’t need us to tell you that in 2024, ‘quiet’ is the highest form of luxury.
For the September/October 2024 issue of Esquire, our photographer was given the chance to capture pieces from the Dior Gravity collection in a new and imaginative way. So, we assembled a troupe of contemporary dancers, who spun and balanced the bags and shoes in front of the camera. Scroll on for the full photoshoot.
