What the new English Premier League team kits say about sports and fashion right now
A telling example of how fashion and sport will never exist in isolation of each other

FOOTBALL FANS AROUND the world are eagerly counting down the days until the English Premier League returns for the 2023/24 season. Arguably, the most popular football league in the world, the Premier League reigns as one of the most exciting competitions across all sporting codes. Accordingly, 20 competing football teams within the Premier League have unveiled their respective home and away kits for the new season.
Now, if you think sport and fashion aren’t intrinsically interlinked — you’d be wrong. Particularly in an era, reminiscent of the ’90’s, where football kits have become a part of the street style lexicon.
Ok, pop quiz: What do the football-obsessed and the internet’s favourite style stars have in common? They’re both big fans of sports jerseys. Sporty themes have been threaded throughout the trend cycle in recent years. For example, bike shorts and tracksuits became not only acceptable, but fashionable. That’s not to mention the widespread change in sneaker culture, with brands formerly known largely for their athletic offerings — New Balance, adidas, etcetera — becoming some of the most covetable logos to have emblazoned on your shoes.
Now, from ’22/23 champions Man City to this season’s hot contenders in Arsenal and Tottenham, as well as recently-promoted Sheffield United and Luton Town — the latter who return after a thirty one-year Premier League absence — there’s some serious fashion-forward football jersey’s, sure to be adopted well beyond the field.
