IF THERE’S ONE THING Hollywood loves, it’s an actor that fits the all-American archetype. And from Top Gun: Maverick to romcom Anyone But You and Netflix’s Hit Man, it’s difficult to think of a leading man rising who’s more all-American than Glen Powell right now. (Also, never forget when he played a himbo frat boy in Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens). But his newest film, Twisters, is Powell in his most . . . patriotic role yet: playing an adrenaline junkie chasing tornados around Oklahoma, only to set them alight with fireworks for his YouTube channel.

And it’s been on the Twister‘s press tour that we’ve seen Powell extend this archetype into his fits. Working with stylist Warren Alfie Baker (who also works with fellow strong-jawed American actor Matt Bomer), the actor has been rotating his favourite pieces (namely, vintage Levi’s jeans and boots), while switching it up with various shirts and jackets, depending on the level of formality required. It’s a refreshing approach to press tour meets street style, particularly when the aim of the game with most A-listers is to bat out as many new looks as possible in the name of making an ‘iconic moment’.

Glen Powell style

Nevertheless, the outfit he wore during his recent appearance on The View was a moment indeed. Not because it made a crazy statement, but because it brought so many classic menswear tropes together in the one look. He wore his favourite vintage Levi’s, a pair of cowboy boots, a Western belt, and, beneath his unbuttoned blue shirt, a Brando-esque singlet. It’s an outfit formula that worked for a TV appearance, but we’re hard-pressed to name a context this combination of garms wouldn’t work in: daytime date, casual evening date, party, concert, lunch, casual Friday – even chasing storms across Tornado Alley.

Later that night, Powell attended a formal event in a very similar fit, but switched gears by throwing on a denim shirt (très all-American) and cream double-breasted jacket. A masterclass in when the right pieces can take you from day-to-night. And here, Powell only seems the happier to oblige. The man is from Austin, Texas, after all.
