Netflix Wednesday season 2

NETFLIX CONTINUES TO show why it’s the one to beat in the ongoing streaming wars. While other platforms are battling an exodus of content (looking at you Binge), constant rebrandings (Max rebranded to HBO Max just eight days after arriving in Australia), and a general staleness (pick a streamer, they’re all guilty), Netflix is going from strength to strength. July saw the arrival of hits like Happy Gilmore 2, Untamed and The Old Guard 2, now another bumper month lies ahead.

But with so many new films, shows and documentaries arriving every day, choosing what to watch is its own challenge. That’s where we come in. To help you find what’s worth watching on Netflix in August, we’ve rounded up the best new pieces of content coming to the streamer. Scroll on, and get ready to add to your watchlist.

Wednesday season 2

In season two of Wednesday, Jenna Ortega’s eponymous character is reeling from all the extra friendliness and positive attention she’s been getting since reluctantly saving her school in season one. She’ll soon have bigger problems, however, once new cast members Steve Buscemi and Billie Piper join Nevermore Academy’s teaching staff, with the intent of shaking up the school. Expect to see more of the Addams family in season two, with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman (Morticia and Gomez) slated for larger roles after being kept to the margins in season one.

Long Story Short

From the mind of BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg springs Long Story Short, another animated dramedy. This time, a famous horse isn’t the focus. The series follows the ups and downs of a dysfunctional family, exploring darker periods where old wounds are uncovered, and hilarious moments of triumph. The voice cast includes Ben Feldman, Dave Franco and Abbie Jacobson.

The Thursday Murder Club

Richard Osman’s bestselling cosy crime book series has inevitably made its way to the screen. The Thursday Murder Club film will adapt the first book in Osman’s series, which sees our beloved team of retirees take shape after the suspicious death of the property developer who owns their retirement village. The cast for the whodunnit is a who’s-who of gray and graying stars: Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie are the members of the club, while David Tennant, Richard E Grant, Naomi Ackie and Jonathan Pryce also feature.

The Iron Claw

The Iron Claw sounds like the ultimate dude movie: four all-American brothers, the Von Erichs, who are all wrestlers, rise to fame thanks to their incredibly tight bond and father’s guidance. But that description belies the fact that it’s a surprising tear-jerker. You see, the Von Erich’s (a real-life family of pro wrestlers) have something of a family curse following them around. When the film begins, the curse has already claimed the life of the family’s oldest son, and while we can’t reveal too much more without spoiling it, let’s just say that the tears will keep on flowing.

The Brutalist

The Brutalist follows László Tóth, a visionary architect who escapes the Holocaust and arrives in the USA hoping to rebuild his life and career. He struggles to find his footing in a strange new country, until a wealthy industrialist recognises his talent and becomes his benefactor, a decision that will prove fateful. The film earned 10 Oscar nominations, winning three, including Adrien Brody for Best Actor.
