JUST IN TIME FOR MELBOURNE’S summer circuit, the NGV has teamed up with Comme des Garçons – a pairing that feels obvious in hindsight.

From today, the NGV design store hosts a Melbourne-exclusive POCKET installation, essentially a compact drop of Rei Kawakubo’s world transplanted onto St Kilda Road. Launching alongside Westwood | Kawakubo, the show uniting two of fashion’s great contrarians, the edit carries the same energy: direct, clever, and quietly rebellious.

The NGV x CDG pieces range from tees and shirts to accessories and homewares, many stamped with Kawakubo-esque statements about freedom and individuality. One tee simply reads, “my energy comes from freedom and a rebellious spirit” across the front.

Even the basics have personality: striped shirts with typography hidden on the back, leather pouches that feel like low-key collector items, and mugs and tumblers that bring a little CDG philosophy into the kitchen.

The installation also folds in favourites from PLAY, Wallet Comme des Garçons, and the full fragrance line – effectively a condensed CDG universe for anyone who knows the codes.

NGV Director Tony Ellwood says Kawakubo has “imbued every part of this collaboration with her creative spirit and deeply personal worldview,” and it shows.

Melbourne doesn’t often get fashion moments this intentional – or this easy to take home.
