Forrest Gump receives his pair of Cortez’s in Forrest Gump.

MAYBE THERE’S SOMETHING in the air, but it feels like everyone is talking about the Nike Cortez. First, Nike re-released the most iconic Cortez of all, the ‘Forrest Gump’, to much acclaim earlier this year. Then Jeremy Allen White revealed that the Cortez is his favourite shoe, and interest jumped accordingly. Now, search traffic is showing that, if it’s not the shoe everyone’s wearing, the Cortez is at least on everyone’s mind.

Originally conceived in the late ‘60s, the Cortez was Nike co-founder and running coach Bill Bowerman’s design philosophy in physical form. Bowerman wanted a shoe that would provide comfort for as long as its wearer could run. He achieved this by combining a full-length midsole with a layer of spongy rubber just beneath the upper to absorb impact and provide better long-term cushioning. This is now an industry standard, but being first to the punch allowed the Cortez to become a bestseller.

While it was already frequently selling out, the Cortez experienced a surge in popularity circa 1994, after it featured conspicuously in Forrest Gump. Cast your mind back to your last viewing of the film and see if you can recall the scene in which Jenny gifts Forrest a pair of sneakers. Those sneakers were Cortez’s with a white, red and blue colourway that Forrest later wears while running across America. He also gives them a fairly resounding endorsement, saying they were “the best gift anyone could get in the wide world.”

Today, the Cortez remains one of Nike’s bestselling shoes – although it’s no longer seen as a running shoe by most who wear it. Instead, the Cortez has found its niche as a versatile, retro-style trainer that is suitable for daily wear. The ease with which a Cortez can be dressed up or down only adds to its charm, and with endorsements from the likes of Forrest Gump and Jeremy Allen White, it’s hard to see it falling out of favour.

So, of all the Cortez trainers that have emerged over the last 50+ years, which stands above the rest? Read on to find out.

Which Nike Cortez is the best?

10. Nike Cortez in Gold, White and Royal Blue

It may have a name that’s eerily similar to the middling 2023 film Red, White and Royal Blue, but there’s nothing middling about this Cortez. Its primary colours – gold and blue – easily blend together without a gradient effect, making them an eye-catcher. What’s more, this is a newer Cortez, with a wider toe area and firmer side panels for extra comfort.

9. Nike Cortez in Brown Vintage Suede

It has been a few years now since Nike started making the Cortez in suede, but we’re still surprised they didn’t take to the material sooner. There’s something about the vintage fabric that meshes perfectly with the retro form of the Cortez. Of all the suede Cortez’s though, this is the only one to appear on this list. We feel the soft brown palette is best suited to the material. We also give bonus points for looking like a warm hug.

8. Nike Cortez ‘Oregon’

Best Nike Cortez

Inspired by Cortez designer Bill Bowerman’s 24-year tenure as the track and field coach for the University of Oregon, the Oregon Cortez is draped in the yellow and green colours of the Oregon Ducks’ college sports teams. The colour scheme comes together nicely and when coupled with nylon uppers and suede overlays, you’ve got a finished product that would be a worthy addition to your wardrobe, but can also double as sports memorabilia if you happen to be a Ducks fan.

7. Nike Cortez in Green, Pink and Beige

A newcomer in the Cortez stable, this watermelon-hued shoe boasts a fusion of dark pine green textiles and flashes of pink. The Cortez is primarily known as a spring/summer shoe, so the resemblance to a certain summer fruit is fitting. Just make sure you style this one appropriately, it’s easy to get wrong.

6. Nike Cortez in Red, Blue and White

An inverse colourway of the Forrest Gump (which – SPOILER ALERT – may make an appearance further down this list), this Cortez breathes life into the model. What Nike describes as ‘picante’ red serves as the base and fulfils its role as the bold salient point, but it’s the subtle light blue accent on the midsole that completes the look.

5. Nike Cortez in Black and White

Best Nike Cortez

If you’re looking for a classier Cortez – or any shoe for that matter – we’d typically recommend sticking to a plain black or plain white colour scheme. Although together, those two colours do often form an appealing, clean pair that can be far more versatile, which this black and white Cortez is. The predominantly white base is given an infusion of energy in the form of black accents on the medial swoosh, heel, sole and tongue.

4. Nike Cortez in White, Black and Gold

Best Nike Cortez

What’s better than a classic, clean black and white colourway? A classic, clean black and white colourway with a strip of gold along the sole for a lightening flash of colour. Narrowly edging out its counterpart with one less colour, this black, white and gold Cortez ticks that one extra box.

3. Nike Cortez in White

Best Nike Cortez

And now to Jeremy Allen White’s favourite, the plain white Cortez is as clean as they come, and if kept that way they can complete any outfit. “Yeah, look, my favourite shoes are the Nike Cortez, specifically white-on-white,” is what JAW had to say about them – and he’s a man of his word. He routinely wears the shoe throughout The Bear, which begs the question of whether styling preferences are the only similarities between him and Carmy.

2. Nike Cortez x Kendrick Lamar collab, ‘Don’t Trip’

Best Nike Cortez

The Cortez hasn’t been the most prolific recipient of collaborations – at least compared to other Nike silhouettes. But one of the few occasions where the Cortez did seek design expertise from an outside source resulted in one of the shoe’s best iterations. Back in 2018, Nike worked with Kendrick Lamar on the Don’t Trip Cortez, which remains a coveted collector’s item. Dark red leather provides the ideal base, which is bisected straight down the middle by a white strip. Black laces and accents add to the contrast, but here, the beauty is in the details. On the tongue you’ll spot a ribbon with the words ‘Don’t Trip’ emblazoned on it, a reference to an OG Kendrick song. Printed on the forefoot is the Chinese translation of DAMN, Kendrick’s celebrated 2017 album.

1. Nike Cortez ‘Forrest Gump’

Best Nike Cortez

Apologies to anyone who was expecting a more brazen selection for the top spot, but we can’t go past the classic colourway that propelled the Cortez to the mainstream. The iconic white, varsity blue and varsity red colourway existed long before Forrest Gump introduced them to the world. It was actually one of the bestselling Cortez’s in the ‘70s, before Gump’s endorsement. It remains as appealing today as it did back then, because you simply can’t go wrong with this shoe.

Are Nike Cortez unisex?

The Nike Cortez is widely considered a unisex sneaker and it has been that way since its inception. While Nike often releases Cortez colourways specifically in men’s and women’s sizes, the range of designs available make it easily adaptable to meet various styles, irrespective of gender. In recent years, Nike has been actively prioritising gender-neutral designs for the Cortez, so don’t be deterred if one is specifically listed as a men’s or women’s shoe.

The Nike Cortez owes its enduring popularity to a mix of design credentials and cultural resonance. The Cortez was revolutionary as a running shoe when it debuted, but its low-profile design and signature logo became synonymous with street style in the ‘80s, which is closer to how it’s perceived today. Over the years, the Cortez has shown immense staying power due to its versatility, wearability and ability to fit seamlessly into casual, athletic, retro-inspired and even semi-formal outfits

How to style a Nike Cortez

Styling the Nike Cortez is all about embracing its retro appeal while blending it with modern touches. For a classic casual ‘fit, pair the Cortez with high-waisted jeans or cargo pants and a vintage-inspired T-shirt or jumper.

If you want the Cortez to figure into an athleisure outfit, try it with shorts or tracksuit pants and a fitted hoodie for a sportier look. For a more elevated take, wear it with cropped tailored pants and a relaxed button-down or blazer.
