All the 2024 Oscar-nominated films you can stream right now in Australia
As we approach the pinnacle of awards season, a handful of Oscar-nominated films can already be watchedâor rewatchedâfrom the comfort of your couch.
ITâS AN EXCITING time to be a cinephile. Every year, around mid-January, the announcement of Oscar nominations always brings about a mad rush to see every critically acclaimed film before the big ceremony. This year is no different. But thanks to the rise of streaming services, catching up on the nominees no longer requires almost daily trips to the cinema. A handful of Oscar-nominated films are already available to stream in Australia, and watching a good chunk of the nominees is not an unreasonable expectation anymoreâalthough, there are 38 of them in total, so weâd forgive you for not watching every single one.
As it stands, of the 38 Oscar-nominated feature length films, 16 are available to stream in Australia, with more on the way soon. While some of the heavy hitters like Oppenheimer and Barbie are yet to come to streamingâthey are available to digitally rent or buy thoughâa number of high-profile films are sitting there patiently, waiting to be streamed.
Here, weâve rounded up every 2024 Oscar-nominated film that is available to stream in Australia, for your viewing pleasure.
What Oscar-nominated films can you stream in Australia?
American Fiction
Available to stream on: Amazon Prime (from February 27th)
Oscar nominations: 5
Best Picture
Best Actor â Jeffrey Wright
Best Supporting Actor â Sterling K. Brown
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Original Score
Beginning on a technicality, because American Fiction isnât available to stream for another five days, but we thought weâd include it anyway. American Fiction stars Jeffrey Wright as Thelonius âMonkâ Ellison, a frustrated African-American writer. When Monk is told by his publishers that his books donât sound âblack enoughâ, he writes an outrageous, stereotype-laden satire of standard âblack booksâ, only for it to receive widespread critical and commercial success.
American Fiction raked in nominations in some of the Oscars’ biggest categories and is going straight to streaming in Australia, in the absence of a theatrical release.

The Creator

Best Visual Effects
A rarity for an Oscar nominated film, The Creator wasnât critically well-received. Audiences didnât love it eitherâthe top review on Letterboxd reads âBro shouldâve created a better movie.â But what no one can deny is that The Creator is visually stunning. And with a budget of just $80 million USD, the film represents a refreshing alternative to the flashy, garish and downright dizzying blockbusters of recent years.
Set in a dystopian future where the world is embroiled in a war between humanity and artificial intelligence, The Creator follows an ex-special forces agent who is recruited to hunt down the mastermind behind a weapon that has the potential to end the warâin the enemies’ favour.

Martin Scorsese has done it again. In spite of a few minor complaints surrounding the filmâs excessive length, Killers of the Flower Moon has been generally regarded as Scorseseâs latest masterpiece. As a result, it has more Oscar nominations than any other film on this listâbut Leonardo DiCaprio isnât one of them. An outrageous snubbing, according to some, while others agree it wasn’t his greatest performance.
Based on David Grannâs novel of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon tells the real life story of the investigation into the murders of members of the Osage tribe in 1920s Oklahoma.
Maestro
Available to stream on: Netflix

Best Picture
Best Actor â Bradley Cooper
Best Actress â Carey Mulligan
Best Original Screenplay
Best Cinematography

Best Sound
The Best Actor race may just come down to Cillian Murphy, Paul Giamatti and Bradley Cooper. And thereâs a good reason Cooper is being considered with the same respect as two Academy favourites. Maestro is a biopic about American composer Leonard Bernstein which has been catapulted into Best Picture discussions due to standout performances from its two leads.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Best Animated Feature
Only a lone nomination for Across the Spider-Verse? Well, the Academy have never been fans of animation. The follow up to Into the Spider-Verse and middle segment in the Spider-Verse trilogy has come to be known as the best animated film of all time. No matter, it failed to break out of the stigma imposed upon animated films. Nevertheless, it remains an exhilarating two hours of action that will always have a place in fans’ hearts.
