From L-R: Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’; Bradley Cooper in ‘Maestro’.

IT’S AN EXCITING time to be a cinephile. Every year, around mid-January, the announcement of Oscar nominations always brings about a mad rush to see every critically acclaimed film before the big ceremony. This year is no different. But thanks to the rise of streaming services, catching up on the nominees no longer requires almost daily trips to the cinema. A handful of Oscar-nominated films are already available to stream in Australia, and watching a good chunk of the nominees is not an unreasonable expectation anymore—although, there are 38 of them in total, so we’d forgive you for not watching every single one.

As it stands, of the 38 Oscar-nominated feature length films, 16 are available to stream in Australia, with more on the way soon. While some of the heavy hitters like Oppenheimer and Barbie are yet to come to streaming—they are available to digitally rent or buy though—a number of high-profile films are sitting there patiently, waiting to be streamed.

Here, we’ve rounded up every 2024 Oscar-nominated film that is available to stream in Australia, for your viewing pleasure.

What Oscar-nominated films can you stream in Australia?

American Fiction

Available to stream on: Amazon Prime (from February 27th)

Oscar nominations: 5

Best Picture

Best Actor — Jeffrey Wright

Best Supporting Actor — Sterling K. Brown

Best Adapted Screenplay

Best Original Score

Beginning on a technicality, because American Fiction isn’t available to stream for another five days, but we thought we’d include it anyway. American Fiction stars Jeffrey Wright as Thelonius ‘Monk’ Ellison, a frustrated African-American writer. When Monk is told by his publishers that his books don’t sound “black enough”, he writes an outrageous, stereotype-laden satire of standard “black books”, only for it to receive widespread critical and commercial success.

American Fiction raked in nominations in some of the Oscars’ biggest categories and is going straight to streaming in Australia, in the absence of a theatrical release.

American Symphony

Available to stream on: Netflix

Oscar nominations: 1

Best Original Song — ‘It Never Went Away’

Bobi Wine: The People’s President

Available to stream on: Disney+

Oscar nominations: 1

Best Documentary Feature Film

The Creator

Available to stream on: Disney+

Oscar nominations: 2

Best Sound

Best Visual Effects

A rarity for an Oscar nominated film, The Creator wasn’t critically well-received. Audiences didn’t love it either—the top review on Letterboxd reads “Bro should’ve created a better movie.” But what no one can deny is that The Creator is visually stunning. And with a budget of just $80 million USD, the film represents a refreshing alternative to the flashy, garish and downright dizzying blockbusters of recent years.

Set in a dystopian future where the world is embroiled in a war between humanity and artificial intelligence, The Creator follows an ex-special forces agent who is recruited to hunt down the mastermind behind a weapon that has the potential to end the war—in the enemies’ favour.

Martin Scorsese has done it again. In spite of a few minor complaints surrounding the film’s excessive length, Killers of the Flower Moon has been generally regarded as Scorsese’s latest masterpiece. As a result, it has more Oscar nominations than any other film on this list—but Leonardo DiCaprio isn’t one of them. An outrageous snubbing, according to some, while others agree it wasn’t his greatest performance.

Based on David Grann’s novel of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon tells the real life story of the investigation into the murders of members of the Osage tribe in 1920s Oklahoma.

Maestro

Available to stream on: Netflix

Oscar nominations: 7

Best Picture

Best Actor — Bradley Cooper

Best Actress — Carey Mulligan

Best Original Screenplay

Best Cinematography

Best Makeup and Hair Styling

Best Sound

The Best Actor race may just come down to Cillian Murphy, Paul Giamatti and Bradley Cooper. And there’s a good reason Cooper is being considered with the same respect as two Academy favourites. Maestro is a biopic about American composer Leonard Bernstein which has been catapulted into Best Picture discussions due to standout performances from its two leads.

Nimona

Available to stream on: Netflix

Oscar nominations: 1

Best Animated Feature

Nyad

Available to stream on: Netflix

Oscar nominations: 2

Best Actress — Annette Benning

Best Supporting Actress — Jodie Foster

Rustin

Oscar nominations: 1

Best Actor — Colman Domingo

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Available to stream on: Binge, Amazon Prime

Oscar nominations: 1

Best Animated Feature

Only a lone nomination for Across the Spider-Verse? Well, the Academy have never been fans of animation. The follow up to Into the Spider-Verse and middle segment in the Spider-Verse trilogy has come to be known as the best animated film of all time. No matter, it failed to break out of the stigma imposed upon animated films. Nevertheless, it remains an exhilarating two hours of action that will always have a place in fans’ hearts.

Society of the Snow

Available to stream on: Netflix

Oscar nominations: 2
