ROGER FEDERER may be retired but he is still serving, wristwear-wise. Seated in the Royal Box (where else?) for the Gentlemen’s Singles Fourth Round match between Alex de Minaur and Novak Djokovic yesterday, the Swissman applauded his former rival’s win (1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4), revealing beneath his tailored sleeve the fresh Rolex Oyster Perpetual Land-Dweller. We can always count on Fed, a veteran ambassador of the Swiss watchmaker since 2001, to debut mintys of this cailbre.

News of “a new Rolex model” during Watches & Wonders earlier this year eclipsed any other release at the trade show. What makes it so special? The Land-Dweller represents a massive technical leap forward for Rolex, with 18 patents exclusive to the new watch (and 32 related to it in total). It’s also now one of the few Rolexes with an integrated bracelet, featuring a striking honeycomb dial and super-thin Calibre 7135 movement, boosted by a highly energy-efficient ‘Dynapulse’ escapement.

Paired with his navy double-breasted suit, Federer wore the Oystersteel and white gold version, which – and if we’re going to keep speculating about the next Bond – made him look every bit the MI6 agent on assignment. Telling from this distance, Federer is sporting the 40mm model. The model also comes in a neat 36mm, which we’re still trying to gauge if his wife Mirka was also wearing the Land-Dweller. Maybe in the Everose gold with diamonds? A couples-watch moment? They wouldn’t be the first this Wimbledon, but it’s certainly an early highlight.
