AUSTIN BUTLER’S REVIVAL as one of his generation’s brightest stars came in hot with Elvis. With a slew of hit new films since, and a blockbuster wardrobe to match, there is no telling the heights Austin Butler can reach when it comes to style (and no, that’s not a Masters of the Air pun). While his red carpet moments have been kept to classic straight cuts that tread the line between all-American boy and European sensuality, it all blends into a classicism that borrows from the heartthrobs of Golden Age Hollywood. A darling among the fashion set, Butler orbits in the inner circles of brands such as Saint Laurent, Celine, and Prada.

The California-born actor has starred in a diverse range of roles: major blockbusters like Dune: Part Two, Band of Brothers sequel Masters of the Air, and upcoming film The Bikeriders, alongside Tom Hardy, Challengers’ Mike Faist and Aussie Toby Wallace. Possessing such a range, Butler isn’t just poised to be Hollywood’s next leading action man – he’s already well on his way to securing the throne.

Of course, with every new project comes a new film premiere trail, which requires more outfits than his on-screen Elvis wardrobe. Hence, Butler’s finely tuned look. Here, we pick out some of his best style moments to date.

A classic cut at Cannes

No notes. None. Why go further when perfection has already been achieved? At the Cannes Film Festival photo call for Elvis, Austin Butler sauntered past the press pit in a white camp collar shirt tucked into black trousers, both by famed quiet luxury brand the Row. But what really brought that Hollywood classicism were the wayfarers, the itty-bitty Cartier tank watch with a brown strap, and a dainty little chain – devils, details, etc. Plus, a little bit of heel on a man won’t hurt anyone.

A dashing debut at the Met Gala

Scaling the ziggurat steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is no small feat. Making his gala debut in 2022, Butler wore all Prada as he attended the night with Elvis director Baz Luhrmann, costume designer Catherine Martin, and on-screen wife Olivia DeJonge, who played Priscilla Presley in the flick. A strong and successful debut, Butler’s knack for detail continues with the inky silk scarf for a sensuous touch and a small art deco pin.

Chocolate brown Prada at the Sydney Elvis premiere

Having collaborated on the costumes for Elvis with Oscar-winning designer Catherine Martin, it made sense for Prada to dress the cast throughout the film’s press tour. Early in the tour at Sydney’s State Theatre, Butler’s chocolate brown suit with wide lapels and bell-bottom trousers recalled a bygone era of rock and roll that aligns with Miuccia Prada’s affinity for the seventies.

A double-win at the 2023 Golden Globes

When dressing for awards season, especially when you are nominated, the occasion calls for more formal dressing. You wouldn’t want to be photographed with your award in a quickly outdated ensemble, viewed, to the horror, decades from now. But within these parameters Butler gave his twist of the double breasted suit with those extra-wide peak lapels and languid bow-tie. Not only winning in the styling department, Butler won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his role as Elvis that evening.

Military method dressing

We’re sensing Butler is a fan of the double-breasted suit. At the world premiere for Masters of the Air earlier this year, he opted for earthy tones and a militaristic cut – method dressing to an extent.

Mixing sensuality when you can

Sharing the space with stars like Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet and Anya Taylor-Joy can be daunting. But that wasn’t a challenge for Butler at a recent photocall for Dune: Part Two. In a long and languid double-breasted coat that pools in the sand, Butler is also padded up in the shoulders for that villainous, dominating effect – as is his character Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. And the low-scooping neckline adds a touch of that sensuality he’s known (and lusted over) for, topped off with another dainty chain.
