IT’S ONE THING to see Matteo Berrettini work his magic on the court. Just shy of two metres tall, the 27-year-old Italian has an explosive first serve, and his forehand is just as lethal—though he lost three sets to one, the 2022 Australian Open semifinal against Nadal was a stellar display of the young Tuscan’s potential.
But naturally, as an unofficial member of the Tall, Dark and Handsome club, it was only a matter of time before Berrettini was asked to be an ambassador for a luxury fashion brand. And while he could have joined any brand (who wouldn’t want those cherubic brunette curls in their new campaign?), his partnership with Boss feels especially right.
Announced as a Boss ambassador in January 2022 (days before his ripping Australian Open campaign kicked off), now, Berrettini appears in the brand’s autumn/winter 2023 campaign, alongside a cast of global superstars. Next to supermodel Naomi Campbell, reggaeton singer Maluma and NFL player Patrick Mahones, Berrettini holds his own; a living, breathing, pose-striking fulcrum of style, sport and substance.
Case in point: if you needed further proof that a pale grey suit with exaggerated pinstripes is worth your time and money, well, take one look at this outtake from Berrettini’s Boss campaign. Who knew a pale grey pinstripe suit could look so relaxed. So… nonchalant? The brand couldn’t ask for a better embodiment of its ‘BOSSes aren’t born. They’re made,’ slogan, while Berrettini’s journey from rookie to pro speaks to Boss’ desire to highlight personal journeys of grit, pain, and lessons learned through hard work.
Elsewhere in the campaign, Berrettini sports a steel grey suit and overcoat in a similarly slouchy fashion, which reminds us that when it comes to new-age tailoring, where the look is less stiff and more languid, it’s all about attitude, and how you wear the suit. A Boss on the court. A Boss in front of the camera. And the Boss of wearing suits very, very well.
We’ll be consulting these images when in need of inspiration. In the meantime, we’re gearing up to watch Berrettini take the court in Flushing, Queens, as the US Open kicks off on September 28.
In the meantime, we highly recommend tuning into Boss’ autumn/winter 2023 campaign video, which features the iconic Tupac Shakur track ‘Changes,’ which samples the original Bruce Hornsby and the Range single, ‘The Way It Is.’
