This week in watches: why the Emmy's was full of big timepieces
We take a look at the best watch moments from the past week. Plus, why was Arnold Schwarzenegger detained at Munich airport?

EACH WEEK, we’ll be taking a look at the hottest news, developments and rare sightings in the
watch world—what’s ticking, what’s trending and what’s causing jaws in various corners of the
watch internet to drop. We’ll highlight new brand releases, celebrity watch spots and general
news for all you horologically-minded enthusiasts.
It’s been a quiet period for the watch world as brands take a minute pause to reflect on the
year that was, and what will be for 2024. But just like that, the watch community have returned
to their phones and dedicated watch forums, critiquing all of the epic watch spots at the 2024
Emmy Awards – one of the first major award ceremonies of the year!
Continuing on with the theme of Hollywood and watches, movie megastar Arnold
Schwarzenegger was detained at Munich airport this week for failing to declare a watch of a
sizable figure… what could it be!? Elsewhere, everyone’s favourite moon watch has received a
“dark” new makeover to mark its ties with the historic Apollo 8 mission of 1968.
Keep scrolling for all that dropped in the watch world this week.

1. Some big watch finds at the 2024 Emmy Awards
While this year’s Emmy awards night might have been all about the winners of Succession, Beef,
and The Bear—three series cleaning up across a plethora of categories—we couldn’t help but
notice some of the watch-hits from the red carpet pre-ceremony. Firstly, you had Emmy award-
winning actor Jeremy Allen White clad in a luxurious black tie ensemble, wearing a suitable
Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix to mark the occasion – yes, chef! There was Loki star Tom Hiddleston spotted wearing a IWC Skeleton Portugieser Minute Repeater; a watch just as elegant as the British actor. And everyone’s favourite “cousin Greg” Nicholas Braun from Succession was seen wearing a stunning Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph, not befitting of his character’s personality, ironically (he’s more of a Rolex guy, after all).

2. Arnie probably won’t be back visiting Munich anytime soon after his watch debacle
The seemingly infallible Arnold Schwarzenegger was in fact detained by customs officers at Munich airport this week after failing to declare a $43,000 Audemars Piguet timepiece destined for an auction in support of his climate crisis charity. Schwarzenegger was in Europe this week for the World Climate Summit in the Austrian ski resort of Kitzbühel, where he was bringing the luxury AP timepiece to be auctioned in the name of his charity. Detained in Munich for over three hours, The Terminator star underwent a search and subsequent tax proceedings for not declaring the import – leaving Germany with a whopping $58,000 charge.

3. Omega release a brand new Speedmaster
In celebration of the historic 1968 Apollo 8 mission – the first human flight to ever orbit the Moon – Omega has released a new Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon for 2024. By now, we all should know the significance and importance the Omega Speedmaster played on those early Apollo missions – a tool more than a watch that each astronaut relied upon throughout NASA’s lunar campaign. Now, Omega pays tribute to the storied history of the Speedmaster with the new Dark Side of the Moon novelty – created with state-of-the art technology, a rich palette of materials, and masterful expertise. Aesthetically, there’s a lot to like with this new Speedmaster; the watch’s Calibre 3869, for example, features a laser-ablated Moon relief on the blackened main plate and bridges. Just like the moon, this movement reveals two different
sides, and can be seen through a skeletonised dial. And on the caseback, a series of engravings have been inscribed, including, “We’ll See You On The Other Side” – the final words spoken to ground control by Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell just before the Apollo 8 mission. The new Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon will retail at $23,650.00.

4. Sir Elton John parts ways with some of his most iconic timepieces
This February, Christie’s New York will auction Elton John’s former Atlanta home in a series of landmark sales at Christie’s Rockefeller Center. Comprising 8 sales in total, the auctions will offer a glimpse into John’s extraordinary collection, which represent a turning point in the celebrated singer’s personal journey. This special auction will offer collectors a rare opportunity to own a piece of the musician’s rich history, and watch collectors will know that some of Elton’s most iconic and rare possessions are his timepieces through the years, some of which are now up for grabs. Watches include a highly desirable Cartier Crash 18k gold limited edition asymmetrical wristwatch with ‘crash’ deployant clasp; an exuberant and rare Rolex 18k gold, diamond, and orange sapphire automatic chronograph wristwatch with a ‘Leopard’ Dial; and a unique 18k white gold and diamond set Chopard automatic chronograph wristwatch with date. All pieces are completely befitting of the renegade artist’s style, and can now be yours (for a small fortune, that is).
