Timothée Chalamet becomes Bob Dylan
Plus more of the actor's most on-theme fits
WHEN IT COMES TO CREATING buzz around a film today, there is a fashion formula. Like any formula, there are a few key components required to produce the optimal result, which, in this particular situation, is a film premiere campaign trail the internet can’t stop talking about. There’s the importance of wearing a brand that’s operating in the cultural zeitgeist; the power and potency of archival pieces and historical references. But the most important key component to this formula? A fit that’s wildly on-theme.
If there’s a Hollywood denizen out there that gets it, that denizen is Timothee Chalamet. The actor has been winning red carpets since he first stepped onto them in the early 2010s. Even on the red carpet for his breakout film Call Me By Your Name, the actor was serving in an ocean blue suit by Calvin Klein. Since then, his fits have only gotten bigger. His promo wardrobe for Dune: Part One, alongside fellow Gen-Z red carpet doyenne Zendaya, was a masterclass in how to make headlines. Their combined red carpet star power is a big part of why the release of Dune 2 was postponed until 2024, as the SAG strike meant they were unable to get on the carpet and do what they do best. And we all know how valuable that is.

Finally, Timothée Chalamet teams up with Martin Scorsese
Chalamet’s newest project is the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. Already, the actor has been nominated for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama Golden Globe Award for his role in the project. The film premieres in Australia on January 23, 2025, and Chalamet has recently begun hitting red carpets to promote it.
One of his first outings was in Los Angeles, where he appeared with fellow cast members Boyd Holbrook, Edward Norton, Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning. Still rocking a small moustache from his Marty Supreme character, the actor transitioned back into a soft Dylan aesthetic by way of a black leather blazer punctured with pins, including two bearing the words ‘Bob’ and ‘Dylan’.
In another nod to Dylan, Chalamet wore another pin displaying the words ‘Get Born’, a reference to the lyrics of the singer’s 1965 track ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’.
Oh, get born, keep warm / Short pants, romance / Learn to dance, get dressed / Get blessed, try to be a success, go the track’s lyrics. The look was custom Prada.
Then, a few days later, at the film’s New York premiere, he quite literally became Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival to be precise. Not only did he wear a replica of the star’s grungy outfit – tartan scarf and oversized leather jacket – Chalamet even dyed his hair blonde (or wore a wig, I can’t be quite sure), straightening it into a side fringe which poked out from underneath his beanie.
There’s method dressing, and there’s completely shapeshifting into the star you’re playing. Also interesting is the fact the actor chose a very, very niche fit of Dylan’s, over one of his more iconic looks. Maybe he’s saving that for a later premiere?
As we wait for more looks from his A Complete Unknown press tour to drop, here, we revisit some of the most otherworldly outfit moments to come from Chalamet’s tour de force of public outings in recent times.

A Complete Unknown hasn’t even had it’s US premiere (the film debuts on Christmas Day in the States, before premiering on January 23 in Australia), but already, Chalamet is bringing in the awards nominations for his role as Dylan in the film. The film was also nominated for Best Motion Picture, Drama, while Edward Norton was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, for his role as American musician Pete Seeger.
Timothée Chalamet at the MET Gala
Some of Chalamet’s best looks have been served on the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art – his white Haider Ackermann suit and Converse All Stars in 2021 will live rent-free in our minds for some time. However, Chalamet skipped both the 2023 and 2024 MET Gala’s, a move that fuelled speculation as to why (most outlets put it down to his busy filming and publicity schedules). Will he turn up to fashion’s night of nights in 2025? We’ll have to wait and see.
