FROM ‘SUPERMAN’ TO ‘FANTASTIC FOUR’, 2025’s blockbuster run was the season of superheroes. Both critics and audiences have heralded the return of the good-ol-fashioned superhero flick; their critical and commercial successes putting an end to so-called “superhero fatigue”. However, it’s James Gunn, DC’s co-CEO, who’s emerged as the season’s unlikely winner. The writer and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy moved to Marvel’s competitor in 2022, where he’s been reviving the studio with his signature flair for – what we’re calling – the ‘sincere superhero’ ever since. Bookending Superman‘s $594 million global box office, season two of Gunn’s Peacemaker is coming this week on streaming.

Since reviews were released over the weekend, the show returns three and a half years after its first season with a 97 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are lauding John Cena’s performance of a “well-judged blend of heart and madness”, and how Gunn’s series doesn’t stray from its humble beginnings. There’s clearly an appetite for more sincerity in the often brutish genre; Marvel also released Thunderbolts* earlier this year, which has a similar trauma-bonding motley crew to that of Peacemaker.

Season two will pick up six months after Cena’s Christopher “Peacemaker” Smith and Task Force X saved the world from the parasitic alien butterflies, aka Project Butterfly. But unlike their more popular counterparts in the Justice League, Task Force X is still viewed as second-rate, leaving its members convalescing and existential. In episode one, Peacemaker even tries to audition to join the Justice League. (Note: all we’ll say is to watch Superman before the show premieres.) But after stumbling upon an alternate reality, Peacemaker come face-to-face with a second chance of sorts.
