RIDING HIGH ON the success of The Summer I Turned Pretty, Amazon Prime will need to find a new frontrunner to keep the subscriptions coming in, now that the series’ third season has finished. Luckily for the streamer, it won’t have to look far. Amazon Prime has one of the largest catalogues of any streaming service and consistently lands the rights to films fresh off their theatrical runs. Plus, Amazon’s stable of original films and series isn’t too shabby either.
But with so many new films, shows and documentaries arriving every day, choosing what to watch is its own challenge. That’s where we come in. Best new shows and movies on Amazon Prime, October 2025
Play Dirty
If you’ve been waiting for a sequel to a film like The Nice Guys or Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, then Play Dirty might be as close as you’ll get. Premiering on October 1st, the action-thriller is directed by Shane Black (who also helmed those two sequel-less films we mentioned). It’s based on Donald E. Westlake’s Parker book series and stars Mark Wahlberg as an expert thief. Wahlberg has enlisted the help of LaKeith Stanfield and Rosa Salazar to pull off an epic heist that will pit the crew against the mob.
Harlan Coben’s Lazarus
Lazarus is a psychological thriller starring Sam Claflin as the eponymous Joel Lazarus. Our protagonist returns home after his father, played by Bill Nighy, commits suicide. He quickly becomes entangled in a number of cold case murders as he seeks answers about his father’s death and the mysterious murder of his sister 25 years earlier.
The Ballad of Wallis Island
Based on 2007 short film The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island, this comedy-drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to much acclaim. It stars Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan as a folk duo who reunite to perform for a wealthy fan (Tim Key) on a remote Welsh island. There’s a Fleetwood Mac ‘Silver Springs’ element at play here, as the folk duo are former lovers who have long since gone their seperate ways.
Hedda
Hedda is what Prime Video calls a “provocative and modern reimagining” of one of Henrik Ibsen’s most celebrated works, Hedda Gabler. In case you’re unfamiliar, Hedda is a newlywed who appears to be composed and well put together to observers. Simmering below the surface, however, is a tempest of discontent. When the charismatic Eileen Lovberg reenters Hedda’s life, things threaten to boil over. Tessa Thompson takes on the leading role in what the synopsis calls “a ruthless game of manipulation, where lust, jealousy and betrayal collide”.
Companion
Don’t you just hate it when your subservient android companion goes haywire and starts killing your house guests? That’s the plot of Companion, which stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as companion robot Iris and her boyfriend/owner Josh. The pair join their friends on a weekend getaway at a remote cabin, but things go South when Iris starts to malfunction.
