ARGUABLY THE CLASSIEST event of the year is upon us: it’s time for the Venice Film Festival. From August 27 to September 6, the world’s biggest movie stars will arrive at Lido, the island in the Venice Lagoon where the festival is held, decked out in Hollywood glamour and designer suits as a host of highly anticipated films make their premiere.

It’s still early days, but we’ve so far seen George and Amal Clooney arrive by boat. The couple will be attending George’s upcoming film, Jay Kelly, a hot frontrunner for the Golden Lion. Adam Sandler was also seen in town, never letting his signature style of Hawaiian shirts and basketball shorts waver even in the face of elegance. (Is there a basketball court for the Happy Gilmore actor to practice on while he’s around?) Meanwhile, the casts of Frankenstein and After the Hunt are battling for the title of best dressed cast.

In terms of other actors to keep an eye out for, The Rock (you read that right), will be making his Lido debut, premiering his upcoming A24 boxing film, The Smashing Machine, alongside Emily Blunt. Is the former wrestler vying for an Oscar? That’s where this film festival will decide whether it’s worthy.
