DAVID CORENSWET as James Gunn’s Superman marks a vibe shift in the 87-year-old superhero.

They weren’t looking to recast Henry Cavill’s brute-strength adonis; the timepieces the British actor wore during his press runs were chunky, athletic, and nautical – in other words, very macho. Instead, Corenswet’s take harkens back to a sepia-toned Clark Kent, saying in interviews that much of his physicality was studied from watching Christopher Reeve before him. And as we’ve grown accustomed to ‘method dressing’ on the red carpet, the 32-year-old’s press wardrobe has come in clutch.

Mid-century tailoring has been stylist Evan Simonitsch’s MO for Corenswet throughout the tour. (I’d go as far to say very Mad Men, but less machismo.) Attending premieres in LA and London, the actor stuck to boxier cut three-piece suits – a lesson to learn here for tailoring a buff physique. The mid-century vibe continues for casual appearances: open knit polos chucked over a singlet, tucked into wide-leg trousers. The watches to match? A selection of Cartier timepieces.

As we’ll get into below, playing with width, metal, and strap material has been key to positioning Corenswet’s Superman/Clark Kent as both elegant and timeless. Though we must ask: is Superman a watch guy now?

Cartier Santos-Dumont

While the Santos line has traditionally skewed masculine, the French house has played around with width sizes and metals to even out the playing field.

The extra-large size model Corenswet wore recently to a press appearance in New York City is balanced with its yellow gold case and blue alligator strap. The largest model he’s worn on the list, Cartier likes their timepieces slim, easily slipping under a sleeve to not show off.

Cartier Tank Américaine

Introduced to the Tank line in 1989, the Américaine is one of the French house’s most modern. Featuring an elongated face, widths vary depending on the wearer’s preference to lean into its elegant slimness.

Wearing it to the London premiere, the blue alligator strap subtly completes the superhero’s red, white and blue colourway. And that’s why Corenswet’s pulling it off; how can you reinvent an American icon?

Cartier Tank Louis

At the film’s London photocall, Corenswet flexed a watch guy’s holy-grail. The Tank Louis remains the undisputed icon in Cartier’s lineup, worn by the likes of Andy Warhol, Princess Di, Muhammad Ali and then some. Paired with a brown double-breasted suit, and blue and maroon tie, it’s a chef’s kiss. This is the Superman we’ve been waiting for.
