DID YOU EVER watch the cult classic ’90s film Parent Trap, and think to yourself: Hey! I wish this film was actually about two chronically immature men, starring Megan Thee Stallion, and brimming with so many increasingly ridiculous dick jokes that it earns an R18+ rating?
Nope! Of course you didn’t. But that’s apparently what A24 thought to themselves when they came across the concept for Dicks: The Musical, their first ever musical feature—and definitely a strong contender for “strangest film concept we’ve heard of this year” (and here we were thinking Daniel Kaluuya’s all-grown-up Barney film sounded fairly unhinged).
With the trailer having recently dropped online, we’ve got our first look at what’s in store. Read on for everything to know about Dicks: The Musical, including when we can expect to see it on Australian screens.
What will Dicks: The Musical be about?
A24 describes the plot of Dicks: The Musical as follows: “Two self-obsessed businessmen (writers Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp) discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents, in this riotously funny and depraved musical.”
So … yeah, it’s just Parent Trap, if Parent Trap was written by someone with the emotional and comedic maturity of a teenage boy. Honestly, we can’t wait. The trailer gives us a taste of the absurdist, campy tone the film adopts—as well as a sizeable preview of all the phallic references that lie in wait. To whet your appetite: “Life’s a fucking handjob, and I only play to win”.
We also are introduced to the mutant and inexplicable “sewer boys,” which Nathan Lane’s character insists are “not disgusting, they’re gay culture”. It’s… a lot!

What is Dicks: The Musical based on?
The outrageous concept is actually based on a two-man show dreamed up by the film’s two leads, Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp. The comedic duo debuted the show in 2014 at the New York Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theatre, which famously began in Chicago as an improvisational group spearheaded by comedians including Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) and Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up).
It originally had the somewhat more chaste (but still provocative) title Fucking Identical Twins, but it followed the same concept—a “subversive” take on Parent Trap.

Who stars in Dicks: The Musical?
Aside from creators Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp as the titular dicks—well, the self-obsessed businessmen slash long-lost twins, Trevor Brock and Craig Tiddle—Dicks most notably stars Megan Thee Stallion in her feature film debut. She plays the twins’ “lady boss,” and before you ask: Yes, the film will of course spotlight her musical prowess. “Y’all just servants, this is my palace, built it brick by brick / So get in the line, drop on your knees and suck my fuckin’ dick,” she raps in the trailer. Lyrical genius!
Playing the twins’ estranged parents to ridiculously campy perfection are Will & Grace‘s Megan Mullally and The Birdcage‘s Nathan Lane. Rounding out the cast the in the role of God (because why not, we guess) is Saturday Night Live comedian Bowen Yang.
While it’s adapted by Jackson and Sharp, Dicks is directed by Larry Charles (the producer, writer and director who has worked on Seinfeld, Borat, and Curb Your Enthusiasm).
