KICKING OFF THE MAJOR awards season is the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. With the full list of nominees, spanning film and television, announced overnight, think of the Golden Globes as the early ballots cast for who will perhaps take the ultimate prize: the Academy Awards. But don’t think of it as just a warm up – categories at the Globes are much more diverse (separating Best Motion Picture by genre, for instance), so indicators are spread thick here.

Nevertheless, it’s just the start of the awards race, and as every year goes, there are dominations and snubs. Top nominees in film include Emilia Perez (a drug cartel musical starring Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana) and The Brutalist (a three-and-a-half hour drama epic that’s garnering Adrien Brody much Oscar buzz . . . the kind not seen since 2002’s The Pianist where he won his only Oscar).

After a historic sweep at the Emmys this past September (winning 18 Emmys, the most ever for a show in a single year), Shogun has accrued four nominations. It’s in good company, though, with Only Murders In The Building, also with four noms, and The Bear in the lead with five noms.

In the newly minted category of Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, which made its debut in 2024 (Barbie won), one film seems missing . . . Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two which grossed $1.110 billion AUD.

For the Aussies abroad, Nicole Kidman is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama for here role in highly-anticipated Babygirl. This now makes her a 20-time Golden Globe nominee (wining six of them), the second-most nominated actress of all time, behind Meryl Streep (a staggering 34 noms).

When to watch the 2025 Golden Globes in Australia

The Golden Globes will exclusively stream on Stan on January 6 at 12 p.m. to 3.pm. AEST.

How do the Golden Globes work?

Similar to how the Oscars or the Emmys votes for its winners, there is a governing body of entertainment journalists from recognised media organisations who vote for the Golden Globe winners.

Categories are a lot more diverse in terms of genre and form, so there will be a lot of winner here compared to the Oscars where the pool is smaller.
