Yes, Hennessy is made for summer cocktails
One of the worldâs most famous cognacs, Hennessy is often savoured neat or on the rocks. But as we recently discovered, the spirit has a surprising history of being a staple ingredient in cocktails
âIF YOU’VE EVER seen your dad savouring Hennessy in a warm glass and wondered about the allure, youâre not alone,â says Brand Ambassador Alexander Zanarini. âBut cognac wasnât always reserved for cosy evenings by the fireplace . . . back in 1863, it was a staple ingredient in cocktails, even featuring prominently in Jerry Thomasâ legendary bartending manual, A Guide to Mixing Drinks.âÂ
If this piece of information has expanded your mind to the possibilities of drinking Hennessy, youâre not alone. While here at Esquire, weâre big fans of sipping it neat, it was none other than LeBron James who re-introduced us to the mixing versatility of the cognac, when he teamed up with the brand on âHennessy Limited Editions by LeBron Jamesâ. Not only did the collaboration bring his signature flair to the Very Special (V.S.) and Very Superior Old Pale (V.S.O.P.), but it also introduced a twist on the âHenny-Ritaâ cocktail, courtesy of a splash of orange juice. The result? A slam dunk only The King could pull off.Â
At an Esquire dinner recently, we got talking with Zanarini, who took us on a tasting tour of rare Hennessy, about what makes the spirit so well suited to cocktails, despite its reputation as a neat sip. âIts sweet and floral profile is perfect for crafting fresh and fruity libations,â suggested Zanarini. âItâs a versatile spirit with a modern twist.â
To try his, LeBron and Jerry Thomasâ theory out for yourself, below, Zanarini has shared three of his favourite Hennessy summer cocktail recipes. Having had the pleasure of tasting the trifecta, we can confirm: the cognac is our surprise new summer cocktail go-to. Make it yours, too.
