Sony delivers first look at the female lead 'Madame Web'
Sony drops the exciting new trailer for iconic web slinging spin off, boasting a fresh new set of female heroes.
SONY PICTURES has never shied away from assembling Hollywood’s biggest names to produce thrilling, edge-of-your-seat classics. This time, bringing on board an A-list all-female lead cast for the first time in the Marvel cinematic universe with Madame Web. Dropping the heavily anticipated trailer today, fans were keen to get a first glance on director S.J. Clarkson’s take on a superhero classic—ever since the super news was announced way back in 2019.
Responsible for birthing one of the most iconic superhero brands in generations, ‘Spider-Man,’ a cult classic and, for many, the introduction to the world of anything hero-related; Sony’s latest creative project with Marvel re-ignites the ‘Spider-Verse’ in a display set to kick-start what looks like one action-packed heroine blockbuster. But, this time the girls take on the baddies.
Directed by Jessica Jones alum S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web began shooting last year and has just been moved up on the theatrical release calendar by Sony.
What is Madame Web about?
Poised as a standalone origin story, Madame Web follows the story of Casandra (Dakota Johnson), one of Marvel’s most mysterious heroines, as she confronts her past and forms a relationship with three young women who all have potent destinies. However, they must first survive the dangers of the present, naturally.
Cassandra shares her experiences as a paramedic in Manhattan. After a traumatic experience on the job, she discovers that she has visions of the future and meets Carpenter’s (Sydney Sweeney) group of friends and their enemy, Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim).
Working to prevent Ezekiel from destroying their future, they realise they are all connected and that the sudden heroes might develop spider-related superpowers.
The trailer hints at how each of the women in Cassandra’s circle, such as Julia Carpenter, Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced), are fated to become our different spider-themed heroines, much like in Marvel’s comics. However, as with Sony’s Venom movies, which first appeared in 2018, it’s still a bit strange to see these newer projects immersed in Spider-Man mythology without Spidey himself swinging into the narrative.
Who Stars in Madame Web?
While Marvel and Sony have remained tight-lipped about much of Madame Web’s production, let alone plot, this new trailer shows off the absolute range of two of Hollywood’s most in-demand actresses.
Dakota Johnson takes on a completely polar opposite role to her stunning Fifty Shades performances, returning to screens as director S.J. Clarkson’s main heroine, Madame Web. Playing the role of Cassandra Webb, a New York City paramedic who connects to her newfound clairvoyant powers.
Sydney Sweeney continues to work her way into the film industry after captivating audiences with the popular Euphoria TV drama series. In her new role, Madame Web sees Sydney emerge as Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman, a character connected to Johnson’s Casandra Webb with powers replica to that of Spider-Man.
Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Celeste O’Connor, Adam Scott and Tahar Rahim will all be joining Sydney and Dakota on screen, rounding out a fresh new batch of heroes and characters for what will be one of Marvel’s only 2024 releases.
When does Madame Web hit Cinemas?
Madame Web opens in cinemas Down Under on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
