TRENDS COME AND GO, but the Nike Air Max 1 is perennial. Since it was released way back in 1987, the Air Max 1 has undergone many aesthetic changes, but the foundation has remained the same. The Air Max 1 has withstood a number of sea changes in the sneaker industry, deflecting pressure to shake up its style to remain one of Nike’s bestsellers after more than 35 years.

There’s a reason why the Air Max 1 has stood the test of time. At its core, it’s one of the easiest sneakers to style with any fit. With an exposed air unit, contrasting materials of leather and suede and a low-profile design, AM1s are eminently wearable and can easily be dressed up or down. There’s also the comfort factor, with the Air Max 1 boasting a great deal of cushioning, a padded, low-cut collar and a waffle-pattern outsole for added traction.

Over the years, there have been hundreds of Air Max 1 colourways, as well as a number of collaborations with high-profile trendsetters. So, which of them stands above the rest? That’s what we’re here to decide.

What are the best Nike Air Max 1 sneakers?

10. Nike Air Max 1 X Atmos ‘Animal Pack 2.0’

An amalgamation of synthetic leopard, tiger, zebra and pony – yes, pony – print, Atmos’ collab with Nike took animal print to a whole new level. They might be fairly garish, but in this case, the point was to be as bold and lurid as possible. So while you might not pair these sneakers with formal attire, they are a highly-valued collector’s item.

9. Nike Air Max 1 SP ‘Desert Camo’

Camo colourways can be fairly hit or miss, but Nike got it right with this desert camo model of the Air Max 1. A special project from 2014, ‘Desert Camo’ was inspired by the desert’s winter elements and features a distinctly sandy colourway that proved to be immensely popular, with the original drop selling out within a day.

8. Nike Air Max 1 X HUF

The creative expertise of pro skater turned fashion designer Keith Hufnagel helped launch HUF into its current status as a streetwear paragon, and he lended his knowledge to Nike on more than a few occasions. This AM1 features a blend of greens and greys, along with a cityscape etched into the heel. It’s a sneaker that borders on wearable art, and it was an immediate bestseller.

7. Nike Air Max 1 ‘Tokyo Maze’

Did you know that the Air Max 1 is so iconic that it has its own day of celebration? Well, it does; March 26th. Anyway, the Tokyo Maze AM1 was released as a part of Air Max Day celebrations in 2019 and features an attention-grabbing black-and-white geometric pattern with a few splashes of colour on the laces. Whether there is an actual way out of the maze pattern, we’re not quite sure.

6. Nike Air Max 1 ‘London’

Air Max 1

The ‘London’ AM1 was inspired by – you guessed it – London. More specifically, the city’s bustling streets and waterways are where the design is derived from, with classic London grey colour blocks splotched over the sneaker, as well as embroidery depicting the river Thames on the heel. As anyone who has ever laid eyes on the Thames will know, the blue in the colour scheme is certainly not an homage to the river’s colour.

5. Nike Air Max 1 ‘Watermelon’

Air Max 1

One of the few general releases on this list, the watermelon colourway has been a summer staple since it was released. It takes visual cues from Nike’s famous South Beach colour scheme, but refreshes them with a hit of green suede. Despite the fact that this is not a limited release, you’ll struggle to find it in stores because of how quickly it sells out. Better try StockX.

4. Nike Air Max 1 ‘Grape’

Air Max 1

Another general release, the grape AM1 is more on the simplistic side of the design spectrum. It’s almost entirely white and grey besides a few subtle hits of purple, but the colour blends so well with that premium leather that it earns a place high up this list. The mini-swoosh on the toe-box is a highlight, a simple yet distinctive touch.

3. Eminem x Nike Air Max 1 ‘Big Proof’

Air Max 1

One of the rarest AM1s but also one of the best, only eight pairs of the Big Proof were ever made. Proof was one of Eminem’s closest friends, and this shoe was released to commemorate his death. Each shoe was auctioned off, with the funds raised going to Eminem’s charity. The Big Proof AM1s remain one of the rarest and most valuable Nike sneakers in existence.

2. Nike Air Max 1 OG ‘Obsidian’

Air Max 1

One of the original two Air Max 1 colourways, the Obsidian AM1 was re-released in 2017 to coincide with its 30-year anniversary. It’s a lot easier to find nowadays, but less exclusivity has lost it no appeal. The Obsidian’s colourway is relatively simple compared to some of the other entries on this list, but its clean, contrasting lines are pure heat.

1. Nike Air Max 1 OG ‘Varsity Red’

Air Max 1

The other original Air Max 1 colourway, Varsity Red is one of the sneakers that started it all as the first of its kind to feature an exposed air unit. The novelty of visible air may have worn off by now, but the Varsity Red colourway has endured and remains as clean as it was the day it was released. Some things never change, and we doubt the Varsity Red AM1 will ever be surpassed.

Are Nike Air Max 1s comfortable?

Nike AM1s aren’t just comfortable, comfort a quality they’re actively praised for. This is largely due to their Air cushioning technology. The Air unit in the heel absorbs impact and provides a soft, responsive feel, making them suitable for all-day wear. The padded collar and tongue further enhance overall comfort, offering a snug fit around the ankle.

How to style Nike Air Max 1s

A strength of Nike AM1 is its versatility. As you can see above, the AM1 comes in a variety of colourways that can fit different styles, but generally, they’re best suited to casual looks. For a streetwear vibe, pair them with slim-fit jeans and a graphic hoodie or oversized tee. For a slightly more elevated aesthetic, throw on a bomber or puffer jacket. An AM1 can also be worn in a sportier outfit, with athletic shorts or tapered sweatpants combined with a fitted top.
