Britpop is back: what to wear to see Oasis in 2025
Britpop is officially back with the Oasis revival now underway in Australia. Here, Esquire breaks down the key pieces that defined the '90s movement

SO, you’re about to see Oasis. Good timing, because Britpop style is back. And you need not look too far.
Visit any hip neighbourhood in an urban city (Newtown in Sydney, Lower East Side in New York City, Camden in London), and you’ll find that ’90s silhouettes in baggy jeans and boxy, cropped-at-the-hip shirts never left these alternative enclaves. Online algorithms have been feeding back the look, too, creating demand for fast-fashion retailers to produce nostalgic cuts, authentic or otherwise.
Crucially, the out-of-the-blue Oasis reunion solidified Britpop’s resurgence. On Oasis’ Live ’25 world tour opening night, 90,000 fans filled Wembley Stadium wearing bucket hats and football jerseys – choice items by frontman Liam Gallagher and his brother Noel.

Britpop’s roots can be traced back to when the brothers broke onto the scene in 1994. With their shaggy mod haircuts, slouchy clothes, and tough British heritage staples, it was England’s answer to the grunge scene happening in the US. Britpop also found its legs with Oasis’ contemporaries – The Verve, Echo Belly, Pulp, Elastica, and Blur – the figureheads who defined the movement before the coming Y2K.
So, in 2025, as we find the tight tyranny of indie sleaze tapering off, we’re now back in some of Britpop’s crucial baggy pieces. As we break down what those are below, what you’ll find are garments that are, for the most part, affordable and approachable. Even as Oasis wraps its global comeback tour this month, these are pieces we’ll be wearing for the foreseeable future.

The football jersey

Despite their differences that led to their decade-and-a-half split, Liam and Noel have their love of Manchester City in common. The brothers have been repping their hometown football club since the ’90s, the team’s jersey becoming a part of their uniform. So, when it came time for Adidas to collaborate on their comeback merch, an Oasis jersey was naturally a part of the line-up, available in a blue or white colourway.

Fisherman knits

As you’ll see further down, several heritage pieces make up Britpop, giving it a distinct look separate from the concurrent American grunge. For the Gallagher brothers’ choice of knitwear: the fisherman. (Our note: buy an XXL for a similar chunky look.)

A bucket hat

A Liam Gallagher outfit isn’t complete without his bucket hat; his perennial favourite piece to cover his face from the paparazzi or enjoy an energy drink on a football field. Since the tour began in May, it’s a trademark accessory fans have since worn in homage. Even his son, Lennon, was Liam’s spitting image when he wore a bucket hat to Glastonbury in 2024. Steeze is genetic.

Baggy jeans

Several music genres embraced wide, flapping jeans as their choice of bottoms. Remember, indie sleaze was still years away when Oasis rose to fame in the mid-’90s. The fit of denim is key to the overall Britpop look: it needs to be slouchy to go with the chunky knits and roomy outerwear.

Technical outerwear

Before performative, sleek gorp-core, men used to wear roomy technical outerwear. Anoraks, parkas, fisherman coats, Britpop style borrowed heavily from military garments. An anorak – an outdoorsy hooded quarter-zip – has been a go-to for the Gallagher brothers over the years.

Adidas sneakers

Like their love of football, the Gallagher brothers have also taken to football-inspired sneakers. Good timing, too, with the popularity of slim silhouettes like the Adidas Samba, Spezial, or Italia – the German sportswear brand has been at the heart of the style’s renaissance.
