The nominations for the 2025 Oscars have been announced
'Emilia Pérez' leads the way with 13 nominations, while 'Wicked', 'Anora' and 'The Brutalist' all fared well, with the awards ceremony set to take place on March 2nd

THE DAY CINEPHILES have been waiting for has finally arrived. The 2025 Oscar nominations have been announced, and so begins the race to watch every single one of them before the ceremony on March 2nd.
This year, the awards are expected to be far more unpredictable. There’s no clear Oppenheimer-esque contender to sweep most of the major categories. But a number of films have picked up double-digit nominations and will be expected to take home a large collection of golden statues. Leading the way is Emilia Pérez, which, despite being near-universally panned by both critics and audiences for its inaccurate portrayal of trans people, misinterpretations of Mexican culture and meme-worthy musical numbers, garnered more nominations than any other film, with 13.
The Brutalist also proved popular despite recent controversy, scoring ten nominations. This comes in the same week it was reported that the film used AI in some scenes. The most controversy-free of the frontrunners would be Wicked, which nabbed ten nominations.
For the individual awards, Timothée Chalamet got his Best Actor nomination for A Complete Unknown. Adrien Brody and Ralph Fiennes are his biggest competition in the category. The Best Actress race is also expected to be tightly contested between Demi Moore, Mikey Madison, Cynthia Erivo and Karla Sofía Gascón. On the Australian front, Guy Pearce is the most high profile nominee with a chance at Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Brutalist. Australian-made Memoir of a Snail is also up for Best animated Feature.

What were the biggest snubs at the 2025 Oscars?
It isn’t usually a divisive category, but the circumstances surrounding the Best Original Score nominations have made it the most controversial of the lot. Back in March, Hans Zimmer and Dune: Part Two were shoe-ins to win, but The Academy disqualified the film from the category for using too much existing music from Dune: Part One. That left Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as the frontrunners for the pulsating soundtrack of Challengers, but they weren’t even nominated, paving the way for Emilia Pérez to presumably win the honour.
Nicole Kidman will be disappointed that she missed out on a Best Actress nomination for her performance in Babygirl. She received a Golden Globes nomination for the role, and the film has been gaining momentum. In addition, we thought that Maragaret Qualley in The Substance and Denzel Washington in Gladiator II did enough to earn nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Actor, but the Academy apparently doesn’t agree.
