WELL, NOBODY saw this coming, but the A-list celebrity most associated with smoking marijuana, Snoop Dogg, is giving up the ganja for good.

In a statement shared on social media, the 52-year old rapper, who has been a longtime advocate for the legalisation and lifestyle use cases of the drug, said that ‘after much consideration and conversation with my family, I’ve decided to give up smoke.’ While also asking that the public respects his privacy during this time.

The decision must not have come lightly, as decades of how we have perceived Snoop as a celebrity is wound up within weed culture, from his pre-fame debut on Dr Dre’s 1992 album The Chronic to founding his own cannabis company, Leafs By Snoop, in 2015. You might remember that he was also once banned from Australia, due to his ‘character’, and on another visit here, he smoked so much weed that he set off his hotel’s fire alarm (twice).

It’s even more of a surprise, as just a day before he announced he was quitting smoking, the man High Times magazine once called the ‘stoner of the century’ launched a collaboration with Martha Stewart and Bic on ‘Best Buds Bags’, a limited edition line of handbags designed for cannabis-smoking enthusiasts. The bags feature subtle hidden compartments and a ‘lighter latch’ to hold a cigarette lighter. “This bag’s got it all. From my favourite lighter, favourite colour, and dime-sized secret stash pockets to stash my favourite herbs,” he said.

However, with all the health impacts associated with smoking, we cannot blame Snoop and his family wanting to seek healthier habits. But it also begs the question what will he do next? Snoop might be a beloved rapper, but he’s also a very successful entrepreneur, and if we were asked to place down our bets, we’d say a Snoop Dogg edible line is right around the corner.
